A deterministic algorithm for nonlinear, fatigue-based structural health monitoring

Dimitrios Pavlou

Summary: This study introduces a new damage estimation algorithm that considers the loading sequence effect, has a solid physical basis, and uses multi-linear damage accumulation. It is the first time that nonlinear damage accumulation estimation in structures under an irregular loading spectrum has been carried out.

A modified nonlinear fatigue damage accumulation model for life prediction of rolling bearing under variable loading conditions

Aodi Yu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a modified nonlinear fatigue damage accumulation model to predict the fatigue life of rolling bearings under variable loading conditions. The results show that the proposed model can more accurately predict the damage accumulation and life compared to existing models.

Nonlinear fatigue life prediction model based on the theory of the S-N fatigue damage envelope

Fredrik Bjorheim et al.

Summary: A nonlinear model is proposed in this paper to assess the cumulative fatigue damage under multistage loading based on the theory of isodamage curves. The stress function for the fatigue life exponent is derived using the S-N curve, and no adjusting parameters are necessary in the model.

A modified fatigue damage model considering loading sequence effect

Dongping Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a modified fatigue damage model that considers the loading sequence effect under variable amplitude loading conditions. The transition sequence is obtained from the counting sequence by an equivalent rainflow counting method and is used to predict fatigue damage accumulation. Rainflow counting matrix and sequence transition matrix are formulated to evaluate the relation between the two matrices and the original loading sequence. The rainflow counting matrix and sequence transition matrix are integrated into the proposed modified damage model based on the linear damage rule for deterministic fatigue estimation. The study also explores the probabilistic fatigue estimation under random loading conditions using one-dimensional exponential and Laplace distributions mapped from the rainflow counting matrix and sequence transition matrix.

On the use of data-driven machine learning for remaining life estimation of metallic materials based on Ye-Wang damage theory

Lei Gan et al.

Summary: This article proposes a model that combines damage theory and machine learning to estimate the remaining fatigue life of engineering components. By introducing damage theory and subtractive clustering, the model achieves lower data requirement, higher performance stability, and better estimation accuracy and robustness.

Method for statistical evaluation of cumulative damage models applied to block loading

Kris Hectors et al.

Summary: This study finds that the current practice of verifying fatigue damage accumulation models is too limited, allowing cherry-picking of verification datasets to improve perceived performance. Future research should rigorously verify new fatigue damage accumulation models to both readily available and new experimental datasets.

Cumulative Damage and Life Prediction Models for High-Cycle Fatigue of Metals: A Review

Kris Hectors et al.

Summary: Fatigue design of engineering structures is often done based on cumulative damage law, with Miner's linear damage rule being the standard despite known deficiencies. Nonlinear cumulative damage models and life prediction models have been developed to address these deficiencies, but have not been widely accepted.

Estimation of remaining fatigue life under two-step loading based on kernel-extreme learning machine

Lei Gan et al.

Summary: A data-driven model based on the kernel-extreme learning machine is proposed to estimate the remaining life of materials under two-step loading, which automatically acquires the optimal mapping relationship to describe the indications of fatigue damage mechanism. Experimental results show that the proposed model provides a much better estimation of the remaining life compared to traditional models and the standard extreme learning machine.
