Experiments and numerical analyses on splitting fracture of wire under multi-pass drawing

Ao Ma et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the splitting fracture and microstructure of wire using SEM and simulated multi-pass drawing of different material properties and die angles using FEM. The results showed that the main crack runs through the core and surface of the wire. Damage and section stress were formed near the center and surface of the wire after each drawing pass, and their enhancement was influenced by die angle, drawing strain, and material properties. The wire core became the source of crack, which propagated to the surface under stress, resulting in splitting fracture.

On the Use of Multi-Step Dies for Improving the Performance against Hydrogen Embrittlement of Cold Drawn Prestressing Steel Wires

Jesus Toribio et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of the manufacturing process on the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of cold drawn wires using numerical simulations. The results show that cold drawn wires using multi-step dies exhibit lower stress and strain states nearby the wire surface, resulting in a decrease in hydrogen concentration and improved performance in hydrogen embrittlement environments. Therefore, using special dies with multiple reductions per die is recommended for the optimal wire drawing process design.

Process Condition Diagram Predicting Onset of Microdefects and Fracture in Cold Bar Drawing

Yong-Hoon Roh et al.

Summary: This study introduces a process condition diagram (PCD) that calculates cumulative damage values of materials through finite element analysis, and determines critical damage values by combining tensile tests. The results show that PCD can help designers minimize the occurrence of microdefects in the drawn material while maximizing the reduction ratio.
