Tannin-reinforced iron substituted hydroxyapatite nanorods functionalized collagen-based composite nanofibrous coating as a cell-instructive bone-implant interface scaffold

Zahid Hussain et al.

Summary: Bone defects pose challenges to surgery and require cell-guided bioengineering methods for support and restoration of bone function. This study investigated the use of iron-reinforced hydroxyapatite nanorod, collagen/polycaprolactone, and tannic acid to create inorganic-organic nanofibers for coating an implant surface. The results demonstrated that the nanocomposite mimics the bone matrix, promoting cell attachment, proliferation, differentiation, and bone remodeling. It shows great potential for enhancing osteointegration.

Hydroxyapatite Coating on Ti-6Al-7Nb Alloy by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation in Salt-Based Electrolyte

Avital Schwartz et al.

Summary: Titanium alloys have good biocompatibility and mechanical properties, making them suitable for dental and orthopedic implants. Improving their osseointegration with human bones can be achieved by developing hydroxyapatite (HA) on the treating surface using the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method in molten salt. In this study, a coating of titanium oxide-containing HA nanoparticles was formed on Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy by PEO in molten salt, and hydrothermal treatment was applied to form HA crystals. The effect of current and voltage frequency on the coating's morphology, chemical, and phase composition was studied.

Effect of Microstructure Refinement on the Corrosion Behavior of the Bioresorbable Mg-1Zn-0.2Ca and Mg-1Ca Alloys

Olga B. Kulyasova et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive study on the effect of high-pressure torsion (HPT) processing on the corrosion behavior of two bioresorbable magnesium alloys in Ringer's solution. The study shows that HPT processing can significantly refine the grain size of the alloys and has different effects on their corrosion behavior.

Corrosion rates of reabsorbable Mg-based materials coated with phytic acid

Laura Angelica Hernandez-Alvarado et al.

Summary: Corrosion rates of powder metallurgy Mg and AZ31 magnesium alloy coated with phytic acid were determined by weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarisation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The initial corrosion current density of coated samples decreased significantly, but the protective effect weakened over time due to microcracks in the coating, indicating potential applicability as temporary implant material for bone repair.
