Lipocalin-2 and calprotectin as stool biomarkers for predicting necrotizing enterocolitis in premature neonates

Marie-Pier Thibault et al.

Summary: Stool biomarkers such as lipocalin-2 and calprotectin can effectively predict the development of NEC in very low birth weight infants over a 10-day period before clinical diagnosis. The combination of LCN2 and CALPRO presents a significant biomarker signature for predicting NEC development, with potential to further improve prediction algorithms by incorporating additional stool markers like PGE2.

A Prospective Cohort Study of Fecal miR-223 and miR-451a as Noninvasive and Specific Biomarkers for Diagnosis of Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Preterm Infants

Pak Cheung Ng et al.

Summary: The concentrations of fecal miR-223 and miR-451a were significantly higher in NEC cases compared to non-NEC cases, but overlapping concentrations limited the clinical value of fecal noninvasive tests. Further studies are needed to evaluate their roles in monitoring high-risk premature infants for NEC development.
