Hypothyroidism does not lead to worse prognosis in COVID-19: findings from the Brazilian COVID-19 registry

Daniella Nunes Pereira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of thyroid diseases on the course and outcomes of COVID-19. The results showed that patients with hypothyroidism had a lower requirement for mechanical ventilation and a trend of lower in-hospital mortality. Therefore, there doesn't seem to be a significant association between hypothyroidism and worse prognosis in COVID-19.

Association of hypothyroidism with acute COVID-19: a systematic review

Jahanzeb Malik et al.

Summary: The systematic review showed a significant proportion of hypothyroidism in COVID-19 patients, with most patients displaying low T3 and normal or low TSH levels. Clinical studies reported a positive correlation between low T3 levels and the severity of COVID-19.

Sick Euthyroid Syndrome on Presentation of Patients With COVID-19: A Potential Marker for Disease Severity

Yair Schwarz et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that free triiodothyronine (FT3) can serve as a prognostic tool for disease severity and death in the early presentation of COVID-19. Patients in the lowest tertile of FT3 had significantly higher rates of mortality, mechanical ventilation, and intensive care unit admission. FT3 remained a significant independent predictor of death even after adjusting for various factors.

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 on the health of geriatric patients: The European GeroCovid Observational Study

Caterina Trevisan et al.

Summary: The GeroCovid Observational study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on older adults, with a focus on risk factors, clinical presentation, outcomes, and the pandemic's effect on neuropsychologic, functional, and physical health. As of September 16, 2020, 1618 cases have been recorded at 66 investigational sites across Italy, Spain, and Norway, with an average inclusion rate of 11.2 patients per day. The study will continue enrollment until December 31, 2020, with clinical follow-up ending on June 30, 2021, to optimize COVID-19 prevention and management strategies.
