Thyroid hormones and platelet activation in COVID-19 patients

E. Colonnello et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively describes the association between thyroid hormones and platelet activation in COVID-19 patients. The results suggest that COVID-19 patients with abnormal thyroid function have increased platelet activation, possibly due to cytokine release. This finding contributes to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of COVID-19.

Skeletal Aging

Jad G. Sfeir et al.

Summary: Aging is the greatest risk factor for chronic diseases, including osteoporosis. Optimizing bone strength through nutrition, physical activity, and vitamin D status reduces fracture risk. Hormonal status, particularly estrogen, plays a major role in bone remodeling. Skeletal aging exacerbates bone loss and imbalanced bone resorption relative to formation, leading to increased marrow adiposity, osteoblast/osteocyte apoptosis, and accumulation of senescent cells. The underlying mechanisms of skeletal aging are diverse and complex.

The Association Between Serum Palmitic Acid and Thyroid Function

Guowei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between serum palmitic acid (sPA) and thyroid function in the US population, especially with free thyroxine (FT4) and FT3/FT4 ratio. These associations were more pronounced in male and obese subjects.

Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index correlates strongly to renal function in euthyroid individuals

Sijue Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that in euthyroid individuals, thyroid hormones have a significant impact on renal function, especially decreased sensitivity to thyroid hormones can lead to reduced renal function. The new composite index PTFQI(FT4) may be more reflective of the association with renal function compared to individual TSH or FT4 parameters.

Management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women: the 2021 position statement of The North American Menopause Society

Jennifer Blake et al.

Summary: This article reviews evidence on osteoporosis screening, prevention, diagnosis, and management over the past decade, and updates the position statement of The North American Menopause Society on managing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. The focus is on assessing bone density and risk factors in postmenopausal women, whether through lifestyle and dietary adjustments or pharmacologic therapy, to prevent fractures and maintain skeletal health.
