Thyroid axis hormones and anthropometric recovery of children/adolescents with overweight/obesity: A scoping review

Carlos Ramos Urrea et al.

Summary: Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in various physiological processes, and their association with obesity in children and adolescents remains controversial. This scoping review analyzed 19 studies to examine hormonal changes during interventions for overweight and obesity in this population. The majority of studies found a positive correlation between anthropometric changes and free T3, total T3, and TSH levels, while free T4 and total T4 levels showed no significant association with weight loss. Further research is needed to understand the relevance of hormonal variations in the development and recovery from overweight and obesity in children and adolescents.

The effect of obesity-related allostatic changes on cardio-metabolic risk in euthyroid children

A. Tropeano et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the biochemical changes in the thyroid and the association between thyroid hormones and cardio-metabolic risk factors in euthyroid obese youths. The results showed that thyroid hormones could influence obesity, lipid, and glycemic parameters in euthyroid youths, highlighting the importance of evaluating thyroid function as a possible adjunctive cardio-metabolic risk factor related to obesity.

Cardiometabolic profiles in children and adults with overweight and obesity and down syndrome

Nicolas M. Oreskovic et al.

Summary: Individuals with Down syndrome are at increased risk for being overweight/obese, but the associated cardiometabolic risk is not clear. This study analyzed data from a multi-site, international cohort to determine the cardiometabolic risk in overweight/obese individuals with DS throughout their lifespan. The results suggest that being overweight and obese does not significantly increase the risk for cardiometabolic disease in individuals with Down syndrome.

Central and peripheral sensitivity to thyroid hormones and glucose metabolism in prepubertal children with obesity: pilot multicenter evaluation

Domenico Corica et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sensitivity to thyroid hormones, severity of overweight, and glyco-metabolic alterations in prepubertal euthyroid children with obesity. The results showed that sensitivity to thyroid hormones was significantly affected by the severity of overweight and the presence of insulin resistance in prepubertal children with obesity. This could potentially contribute to the pathogenesis of glucose metabolism impairment.

Correlation between thyroid function, sensitivity to thyroid hormones and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease in euthyroid subjects with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes

Xiaodan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in euthyroid patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), as well as to evaluate the associations between thyroid parameters, MAFLD, and liver fibrosis. The results showed that the prevalence of MAFLD was significantly higher in T2DM patients compared to subjects without diabetes. In T2DM patients, thyroid hormone levels and sensitivity indices were associated with the incidence of MAFLD.

Reduced Sensitivity to Thyroid Hormone Is Associated with Diabetes and Hypertension

Ladan Mehran et al.

Summary: Recently, reduced sensitivity to thyroid hormone has become more common in the general population and is thought to be associated with metabolic parameters. This study found that TFQI, a new index for thyroid hormone resistance, is significantly associated with high blood pressure and diabetes in euthyroid subjects. However, caution is needed when interpreting the results for diabetes, and further studies are necessary.

Pediatric Population with Down Syndrome: Obesity and the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Their Assessment Using Omics Techniques-Review

Marta Hetman et al.

Summary: People with Down syndrome are at a higher risk of developing obesity, oxidative stress disorders, metabolic disorders, and lipid and carbohydrate profile disorders compared to the general population. The presence of additional gene copies on chromosome 21 increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Metabolic disorders and intensified oxidative stress increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease in individuals with Down syndrome.

Thyroid Function and Metabolic Syndrome in Children and Adolescents with Neuromotor Disability

Valeria Calcaterra et al.

Summary: Thyroid function is crucial in maintaining nervous system integrity and metabolic homeostasis. This study explored the relationship between TSH, FT4, and FT3 release patterns and metabolic syndrome (MS) in children with neuromotor impairment (NI). The findings suggest that the patterns of TSH, FT4, and FT3 release may reflect thyrotropic adaptation, compensatory mechanisms, and the occurrence of MS in both NI and disability.

Acanthosis Nigricans in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes or Obesity: The Potential Interplay Role between Insulin Resistance and Excess Weight

Valeria Calcaterra et al.

Summary: The prevalence of Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is higher in patients with type 1 diabetes and obesity compared to controls. Individuals with AN tend to be older, have higher BMI, waist circumference, fasting triglycerides, and blood pressure. The presence of AN is associated with insulin resistance in patients with obesity, while in type 1 diabetes, it is linked to being overweight or obese independent of insulin resistance. The interplay between impaired insulin signaling, insulin resistance, and excess weight plays a role in the pathogenic mechanism of AN.

Metabolic Diseases and Down Syndrome: How Are They Linked Together?

Manon Moreau et al.

Summary: Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, leading to intellectual disabilities. Research has shown improvements in life expectancy for Down syndrome patients, but there is a need to address complications like obesity and diabetes to enhance their quality of life. Understanding the molecular mechanisms linking Down syndrome with metabolic disorders such as Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes could help identify new drug targets for therapeutic solutions.

Sensitivity to Thyroid Hormone Indices Are Closely Associated With NAFLD

Shuiqing Lai et al.

Summary: FT3/FT4 and TFQI(FT3) were positively correlated with TG, TC, and LDL-C levels, and negatively correlated with HDL-C level. FT3, FT3/FT4, and TFQI(FT3) were positively associated with dyslipidemia and NAFLD. TFQI(FT3) and FT3/FT4 performed better in predicting NAFLD compared to TFQI(FT4), but had low sensitivity and specificity at the optimal cut-points. TFQI(FT4) showed no association with dyslipidemia and NAFLD.
