Mathematical modeling of smoking habits in the society

I. R. Sofia et al.

Summary: In this study, a nonlinear mathematical model is formulated and analyzed to study the dynamics of smoking and its societal impact. The model considers different compartments representing potential smokers, occasional smokers, smokers, and quitters. The inclusion of smoking-related deaths and exploration of parameter impacts on equilibrium levels provide insights into understanding and addressing smoking habits.

Impact of strong determination and awareness on substance addictions: A mathematical modeling approach

Sayooj Aby Jose et al.

Summary: This study examines the significant impact of awareness and strong determination in preventing substance addiction, as well as the adverse effects of addiction on self-efficacy, psychological and physical health. Through mathematical modeling and global stability analysis, conclusions are drawn on preventive measures against addiction.

Stability analysis and comparative study on different eco-epidemiological models: Stage structure for prey and predator concerning impulsive control

Sayooj Aby Jose et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the asymptotic behavior of four integrated pest management models with stage structure. By studying the stability of the periodic pest extinction solution, valid theoretical results for successful pest management are obtained, and threshold time limits for the impulsive release of control measures are established.

Projecting the impact of Covid-19 variants and vaccination strategies in disease transmission using a multilayer network model in Costa Rica

Yury E. Garcia et al.

Summary: For countries receiving vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, the future course of Covid-19 will be determined by the emergence of new variants and the success of vaccination campaigns. A study conducted in Costa Rica using a multilayer network model showed that the introduction of the Delta variant could significantly increase hospitalizations and ICU admissions, depending on the vaccination rates. The study also found that a decrease in vaccination pace could lead to an increase in Covid-19 cases.

Mathematical modeling on transmission and optimal control strategies of corruption dynamics

Sayooj Aby Jose et al.

Summary: This research examines a deterministic mathematical model to study the prevalence of corruption in society, based on the assumption that corruption spreads like an infectious disease. The equilibria of the model are identified and their stability is analyzed. The Corruption Transmission Generation Number (R-C) is estimated using the next generation matrix technique at the corruption free equilibrium points (CFEP). The study finds that CFEP is stable when R-C < 1, indicating the absence of corruption. However, when R-C > 1, the existence of corrupted individuals in society is indicated by the corruption persistence equilibrium points. A forward bifurcation can occur when R-C = 1. Further investigation is conducted to determine the worldwide asymptotic stability of CFEP. The objective of this research is to identify key parameters for future studies, aiming to inform policymakers in maximizing the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic efforts.

Relapse into opiate and crack cocaine misuse: a scoping review

Maike Klein

Summary: This study reviewed international research on relapse related to opiate and crack cocaine misuse, finding that most studies were from the USA and UK, and predominantly used quantitative research designs. The definitions of relapse were controversial, with a shift towards harm-minimization strategies in treatment approaches.
