Alterations in intestinal microbiota composition coincide with impaired intestinal morphology and dysfunctional ileal immune response in growing-finishing pigs under constant chronic heat stress

Yunxia Xiong et al.

Summary: The results of this study showed that constant chronic heat stress significantly reduced the average daily gain and average daily feed intake in growing-finishing pigs, while also causing hyperpyrexia. The intestinal morphological observations indicated a decrease in villus and microvillus height, along with an increase in the expression of heat shock protein 70 under heat stress conditions. Additionally, the study found alterations in the composition of intestinal microbiota, with reductions in certain microbial populations associated with performance and increases in others related to intestinal morphological injuries and ileal immune response.

Role of milk carbohydrates in intestinal health of nursery pigs: a review

Ki Beom Jang et al.

Summary: Intestinal health is crucial for pigs' resistance to diseases and nutrient digestion and absorption. Milk carbohydrates, particularly lactose and oligosaccharides, play vital roles in the intestinal development and functions of nursery pigs. Lactose is a highly digestible energy source, while milk oligosaccharides are bioactive compounds that modulate intestinal immunity and microbiota. The appropriate feeding levels of lactose may vary depending on factors such as weaning age, body weight, or genetic lines.

Prophylactic Delivery of a Bacteriophage Cocktail in Feed Significantly Reduces Salmonella Colonization in Pigs

Anisha M. Thanki et al.

Summary: Infections caused by Salmonella spp. result in millions of cases of human food poisoning every year, with a significant proportion attributed to contaminated pork products. This study demonstrates that prophylactic feeding of phage-treated feed effectively reduces Salmonella colonization in pigs, without negative impacts on the gut microbiota.

Metabolic Responses of Dietary Fiber during Heat Stress: Effects on Reproductive Performance and Stress Level of Gestating Sows

SeungMin Oh et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of acid detergent fiber (ADF) levels on reproductive performance, intestinal integrity, and metabolism of gestating sows, and its carry-over effect on the lactation period during heat stress. The results showed that the application of high fiber diet could reduce the stress response of sows, increase feed intake, and promote piglet growth and development.

TaeGyun Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of dietary ZnO concentration and source on the growth and gut microbiota of weaned piglets. The results showed that nano-ZnO at a certain dose had similar growth effects as pharmacological doses of ZnO and inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

Impact of an anti-Salmonella. TyphimuriumBacteriophage on intestinal microbiota and immunity status of laying hens

MiJin Lee et al.

Summary: Typhoid is a gastrointestinal disease caused by consuming contaminated eggs, and research on laying hens focuses on controlling Salmonella contamination by using effective bacteriophages. The supplementation of bacteriophages significantly reduced the colonization of S. Typhimurium in organs and decreased the mRNA expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the liver, suggesting bacteriophages could be effective in decreasing contamination in laying hens.

Exposure to the environmental pollutant ammonia causes changes in gut microbiota and inflammatory markers in fattening pigs

Yutao Li et al.

Summary: Ammonia is a major pollutant that can cause damage to animals and humans. This study found that excessive NH3 inhalation can lead to changes in inflammatory markers and beta diversity of intestinal microflora in fattening pigs, while L-Selenomethionine can improve the imbalance of microbial flora and the inflammatory injury caused by NH3.Monitoring changes in intestinal microflora and inflammatory markers are important indicators to evaluate NH3 toxicity.

Bocheng Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of feed additives as potential antibiotic substitutes on bacteriostasis, growth performance, intestinal morphology, and immunity in livestock production. AMPs showed the best bacteriostasis effects, followed by organic acids, plant extracts, and oligosaccharides. Different feed additives had varying effects on growth performance, intestinal morphology, and immunity, with optimal doses identified for each.

Bacteriophage as an Alternative to Antibiotics Promotes Growth Performance by Regulating Intestinal Inflammation, Intestinal Barrier Function and Gut Microbiota in Weaned Piglets

Yongdi Zeng et al.

Summary: This study found that dietary supplementation of 400mg/kg bacteriophage can improve the growth performance, intestinal morphology, barrier function, and gut microbiota of weaned piglets, serving as an antibiotic alternative. The underlying mechanism involves a positive effect on intestinal inflammation, barrier function, and gut microbiota.

Summary: The study determined the effects of early administration of Lactobacillus salivarius on growth performance, gut morphology, and gut microbiota in suckling piglets. Results showed that LS supplementation, particularly from high BMI pigs, could improve intestinal villus height in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, suggesting potential benefits for neonatal piglets.

Assessment of the microbiome during bacteriophage therapy in combination with systemic antibiotics to treat a case of staphylococcal device infection

Andre Mu et al.

Summary: Our study found that adding phage therapy to systemic antibiotics for 4 weeks in a patient with Staphylococcus aureus device infection resulted in largely unchanged microbiota profile. Metabolomic analysis suggested potential indirect ecological impacts to the host microbiome. Phages used to treat the patient were not detected in metagenomic samples from saliva, stool, and skin, but were detected in patient serum using endpoint-PCR.

Weaning-associated feed deprivation stress causes microbiota disruptions in a novel mucin-containing in vitro model of the piglet colon (MPigut-IVM)

Raphaele Gresse et al.

Summary: A new in vitro model of the weaning piglet colon (MPigut-IVM) was developed to investigate the impact of feed deprivation on microbiota, showing that lack of nutrients induced microbial imbalance with increased abundance of certain bacteria and decreased production of specific metabolites. This model could serve as an innovative tool for comparative studies on weaning stressors and their effects on piglet microbiota.

Effects of dietary fibre on metabolism and performance in sows

V. G. Papatsiros et al.

Summary: The supplementation of extra crude fibre in breeding stock with PDS problems due to nutritional imbalance has beneficial effects on their health and performance, as shown by improvements in body condition score, faeces score, PDS score, as well as decreased stillborn and crushed piglets and increased liveborn and weaned piglets numbers in the supplemented group. Moreover, higher insulin and leptin levels in serum were noticed in the supplemented group, indicating potential metabolic improvements.
