A new genus name for pygmy lorises, Xanthonycticebus gen. nov. (Mammalia, Primates)

K. Anne-Isola Nekaris et al.

Summary: Lorisiformes are nocturnal primates with four genera and several species. The pygmy slow loris has distinct differences from other Nycticebus species and warrants recognition at the generic level. We propose the name Xanthonycticebus gen. nov. for the pygmy slow lorises and suggest a common name of pygmy lorises. This new genus shows significant differences in morphology, behavior, karyotype, and genetics compared to other species.

Functional genomics analysis reveals the evolutionary adaptation and demographic history of pygmy lorises

Ming-Li Li et al.

Summary: Lorises are globally threatened primates with unique physiological and behavioral features. Through genome sequencing and functional studies, specific gene expansions related to detoxification, muscle development, and circadian rhythm were found in the pygmy loris. The pygmy loris also exhibited evolutionary convergence with the koala in genes involved in metabolism and muscle development. Additionally, population genomics analysis revealed an inverse relationship in demographic trends between two coexisting loris species.
