Whole-body adipose tissue multi-omic analyses in sheep reveal molecular mechanisms underlying local adaptation to extreme environments

Ya-Xi Xu et al.

Summary: By studying transcriptome and lipidome profiles of adipose tissues from thin-tailed and fat-tailed sheep populations in different seasons, we identified genetic variants and functional genes related to fat-tail phenotype. These genes are involved in lipid metabolism, extracellular matrix remodeling, molecular transport, and inflammatory response, and contribute to adipocyte hyperplasia and enhanced adipose homeostasis in fat-tailed sheep. This study improves our understanding of animal adaptation to extreme environments.

Genome-wide association and genotype by environment interactions for growth traits in US Red Angus cattle

Johanna L. Smith et al.

Summary: In this study, genotypic information and heritability estimates were used to identify genomic regions associated with growth traits in Red Angus cattle. Pleiotropic QTL regions were discovered, and positional candidate genes previously associated with feed efficiency and growth traits in beef cattle were also found to be associated with Red Angus growth traits. Additionally, significant genotype-by-environment (GxE) interactions were detected, implicating the role of vasodilation, metabolism, and the nervous system in genetic sensitivity to environmental stress.

Favored single nucleotide variants identified using whole genome Re-sequencing of Austrian and Chinese cattle breeds

Maulana M. Naji et al.

Summary: Cattle genome has evolved through various evolutionary processes, and the iSAFE method has shown effectiveness in identifying selection signatures. This study analyzed whole-genome resequencing data of Austrian Fleckvieh and Chinese indigenous breeds, and compared iSAFE with the classical iHS approach. The results demonstrate that iSAFE can detect more significant SNVs, and taurine cattle have more detectable signals than indicine individuals.

How Geography and Climate Shaped the Genomic Diversity of Italian Local Cattle and Sheep Breeds

Gabriele Senczuk et al.

Summary: This study examines the inter-relationships among geography, climate, and genetics in Italian local cattle and sheep breeds. The results show that geography plays a larger role in sheep genetic diversity compared to cattle, and once geography is accounted for, climatic effects account for a portion of the genetic diversity in both species. Stronger geographic effects in sheep can be attributed to higher predomestication genetic variability and biological and productive specializations. Climate alone has a lesser impact on current genetic diversity in both species, despite the confounding of climate and geography. These findings confirm that the evolution of both species is a complex history influenced by human needs and environmental conditions.

Summary: Understanding genotype-by-environment interactions is crucial for environmental adaptation and sustainability in mammals. This study explored the impact of GxE on growth traits in beef cattle, identifying functional loci with non-additive genetic effects and revealing biological mechanisms of environmental response through functional annotation and pathway analysis of GxE genes. The complexity of genetic basis underlying GxE provides new insights into how specific genes interact with different environmental conditions to influence adaptation and productivity.
