Reliability of histologic assessment for NAFLD and development of an expanded NAFLD activity score

Rish K. Pai et al.

Summary: After extensive training and discussion among a group of experienced pathologists, we improved the reliability of multiple existing NAFLD histologic indices and fibrosis staging systems. Hepatocyte ballooning and MDBs showed the strongest correlation with disease activity and were used to develop the expanded NAS. Further validation, including evaluation of responsiveness, is still needed.

Altered branched-chain α-keto acid metabolism is a feature of NAFLD in individuals with severe obesity

Thomas Grenier-Larouche et al.

Summary: This study found that increased levels of BCKA in the blood and hepatic expression of BCKDK are associated with the presence and severity of NAFLD/NASH in humans. SREBP1 has been identified as a transcriptional regulator of BCKDK.

High-throughput LC-MS method to investigate postprandial lipemia: considerations for future precision nutrition research

Justine M. Mucinski et al.

Summary: Elevated postprandial lipemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This study introduced a new method using stable isotope tracing to quantify lipid handling in healthy men following meals with varying fat amounts. The results demonstrated differences in the entry rates of TG species across fat levels, which can be valuable for future research in precision nutrition and clinical drug development.

Mitochondria Matter: Systemic Aspects of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Diagnostic Assessment of Liver Function by Stable Isotope Dynamic Breath Tests

Agostino Di Ciaula et al.

Summary: The liver plays a crucial role in systemic metabolic processes, with liver mitochondria being key in degrading pathways and providing energy for cells. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common chronic liver disorder associated with obesity and metabolic disorders, and its progression can lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Evaluation of liver function in NAFLD patients using C-13 breath test (BT) can assess mitochondrial function and overall liver health, providing a cost-effective and indirect method for dynamic liver function testing. Further applications of C-13-BT are anticipated in clinical medicine.

Human intestinal lipid storage through sequential meals reveals faster dinner appearance is associated with hyperlipidemia

Miriam Jacome-Sosa et al.

Summary: The study found that intestinal cells can store lipids after a meal, impacting lipid absorption patterns in insulin-sensitive and insulin-resistant subjects. Insulin-sensitive subjects showed lower nocturnal and next-morning hyperlipidemia, while insulin-resistant subjects exhibited faster fat appearance rates.
