Antifungal efficacy of sixty essential oils and mechanism of oregano essential oil against Rhizoctonia solani

Tian-Lin Wu et al.

Summary: This study selected 60 essential oils to evaluate their antifungal activity against six plant pathogenic fungi. The results showed that oregano essential oil is an effective natural antifungal product and can inhibit Rhizoctonia solani. Morphological and ultrastructural observations revealed that oregano essential oil damaged the mycelial morphology and cell membrane. Further transcriptomic analysis found that oregano essential oil affected the activity of oxidoreductase, leading to lipid peroxidation and cell death. Additionally, oregano essential oil inhibited the formation of sclerotia of Rhizoctonia solani. This study suggests that essential oils can serve as a new and potential source of natural and eco-friendly antifungal agents.

Methyl Donors, Epigenetic Alterations, and Brain Health: Understanding the Connection

Rola A. Bekdash

Summary: Methyl donors, such as choline, betaine, folic acid, methionine, and vitamins B6 and B12, play critical roles in the one-carbon metabolism and have neuroprotective functions. Imbalances in the levels of these micronutrients during critical periods of brain development have been linked to epigenetic alterations and stress-related disorders. Monitoring appropriate levels of methyl donors at all stages of development is important for a healthier brain.

Dietary supplementation with a microencapsulated complex of thymol, carvacrol, and cinnamaldehyde improves intestinal barrier function in weaning piglets

Kaibin Mo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that dietary supplementation with MEEO improves intestinal barrier function in weaning piglets. MEEO increases the ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the jejunum and decreases crypt depth in the ileum. It upregulates the mRNA expression of tight junction protein and increases the concentrations of secretory immunoglobulin A, cathelicidin antimicrobial peptides, and interleukin 10, while decreasing the concentration of interleukin 1 beta. Additionally, MEEO promotes the proliferation of Lactobacillus, which is positively correlated with the improvement of mucosal barrier function.

Summary: The effects of chitosan (CS) coating with oregano essential oil (OEO) on the microbial and physicochemical characteristics of chicken breast fillets during refrigerated storage were examined. The CS + OEO coating reduced the total viable count and Pseudomonas deceptionensis CM2 levels in chicken breast fillets. The quality attributes of chicken fillets, including pH value, color parameters, water holding capacity, and texture, were improved by the CS + OEO coating. Additionally, the CS + OEO coating inhibited lipid oxidation, the formation of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and the generation of unpleasant odors.

Heat Stress and Histopathological Changes of Vital Organs: A Novel Approach to Assess Climate Resilience in Farm Animals

Ebenezer Binuni Rebez et al.

Summary: Heat stress induces functional and metabolic changes in cells and tissues, which can be assessed by histopathological alterations and biomarkers. Various pathomorphological changes and biomarkers associated with heat load have been observed in adaptive and productive organs of livestock. Immunohistochemical analysis identified biomarkers in growth-related organs, reproductive organs, and immune organs that could serve as reliable variables in heat stress assessment in livestock. Examining heat-stressed organ histopathology and identifying cellular markers by immunohistochemistry may help in screening climate-resilient livestock breeds and developing strategies to mitigate the detrimental consequences of heat stress to ensure sustainability in livestock production.
