Resting-state EEG, Substance use and Abstinence After Chronic use: A Systematic Review

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Resting-state EEG reflects intrinsic brain activity and its alteration can reveal changes in cognition related to neuropathology. Chronic substance use is associated with broad intrinsic neural activity alterations, usually expressed as neural hyperactivation and decreased neural communication between brain regions. Some of these alterations can recover from abstinence, but the degree of recovery may vary between drugs.

The Role of Glia in Addiction: Dopamine as a Modulator of Glial Responses in Addiction

Ariadna Jimenez-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Addiction is a chronic and potentially deadly disease that is considered a global health problem. Dopamine plays a pivotal role in the neuronal drug reward mechanisms, while the immune mechanisms of dopamine associated with drug abuse are vital in researching new pathophysiological mechanisms and new therapeutic targets for addiction management. Research on neuroglial interactions and their relation to drug addiction development is still limited, highlighting the need for further investigation in this area.

Low striatal T3 is implicated in inattention and memory impairment in an ADHD mouse model overexpressing thyroid hormone-responsive protein

Raly James Perez Custodio et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that reduced levels of striatal triiodothyronine (T3) due to overexpression of thyroid hormone-responsive protein in mice can lead to inattention and memory impairment, suggesting a potential pathogenetic mechanism for ADHD. The overexpression of thyroid hormone-responsive protein in male mice replicates behavioral features of ADHD, which can serve as an animal model for the predominantly inattentive subtype of ADHD. Furthermore, TH replacement therapy in these mice rescued the inattention and memory impairment, supporting the involvement of the upregulated thyroid hormone-responsive protein gene in ADHD pathology.

Abuse Potential of Synthetic Cannabinoids: AM-1248, CB-13, and PB-22

Kwang-Hyun Hur et al.

Summary: The recreational use of synthetic cannabinoids is on the rise, posing a threat to public health. Despite being falsely advertised as legal and safe, they have been reported to cause acute intoxication and addictive disorders. Due to the lack of scientific evidence, synthetic cannabinoids are weakly regulated and continue to circulate in illegal drug markets.

Repeated exposure to JWH-018 induces adaptive changes in the mesolimbic and mesocortical dopaminergic pathways, glial cells alterations, and behavioural correlates

Nicholas Pintori et al.

Summary: Repeated exposure to JWH-018 induced anxious and aversive behaviors, decreased dopamine neurons in the VTA, and altered dopaminergic transmission. The drug also affected dopamine sensitivity in the NAc shell and core, while causing neuroinflammatory responses in specific brain areas. This study suggests that recurring use of Spice/K2 drugs may have detrimental effects on behavior and dopamine regulation.

Cannabis use, abuse, and withdrawal: Cannabinergic mechanisms, clinical, and preclinical findings

Andrew J. Kesner et al.

Summary: Cannabis sativa is the most widely used illicit drug in the world, with its main psychoactive component being THC. Despite its medical therapeutic qualities, frequent cannabis or THC users may develop cannabis use disorder, exhibiting classical addiction symptoms. Effective treatments for cannabis use disorder and withdrawal symptoms are currently lacking, highlighting the importance of research on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these syndromes.

Mitochondrial oxidant stress mediates methamphetamine neurotoxicity in substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons

Steven M. Graves et al.

Summary: Abusing methamphetamine is linked to a higher risk of developing Parkinson's disease by increasing mitochondrial oxidant stress in SNc dopaminergic neurons. This damage was confirmed by observing degeneration in these neurons after chronic methamphetamine use, which could be prevented by inhibiting MAO. Shorter bouts of methamphetamine use also caused oxidative stress and degeneration, with different sensitivities to MAO and Cav1 Ca2+ channel inhibition, pointing towards potential pharmacological strategies to reduce the risk of PD in patients with methamphetamine use disorder.

R (-)-methoxetamine exerts rapid and sustained antidepressant effects and fewer behavioral side effects relative to S (+)-methoxetamine

Chrislean Jun Botanas et al.

Summary: The study reveals that both S-MXE and R-MXE exhibit antidepressant effects in mice, possibly mediated via glutamatergic and serotonergic mechanisms. R-MXE induces fewer behavioral side effects compared to S-MXE, making it a safer antidepressant option.

Spectral power and theta-gamma coupling in the basolateral amygdala related with methamphetamine conditioned place preference in mice

Summary: The study found that local field potential oscillations in the basolateral amygdala were sensitive to METH conditioned place preference (CPP), with the METH group significantly increasing time spent in the METH-paired compartment during post-conditioning with METH cues. Significant suppressions of theta and alpha powers were observed in neural signals, indicating the neural mechanisms of METH CPP.
