Real-World Evidence of the Clinical and Economic Impact of Long-Acting Injectable Versus Oral Antipsychotics Among Patients with Schizophrenia in the United States: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Dee Lin et al.

Summary: In the United States, long-acting injectable antipsychotics have been shown to reduce hospitalizations and emergency room visits, improve medication adherence, and have no significant difference in total healthcare costs compared to oral antipsychotics for the treatment of patients with schizophrenia. These findings provide strong evidence on the clinical and economic benefits of long-acting injectable antipsychotics in real-world settings.

The Use of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics (LAI) in the Serious Mental Illness (SMI) Patients Enrolled in an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Program

Maria Ruiza Yee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of using LAIs on the frequency of emergency room visits and hospitalizations among patients with serious mental illness. The results showed that patients using LAIs had more psychiatric hospitalizations compared to non-users, but there was no difference in psychiatric emergency visits and ACT visit frequency between the two groups. Therefore, it seems that the use of LAIs did not benefit the patient population in the ACT program in terms of relapse prevention.
