COVID-19: General Strategies for Herbal Therapies

Samaneh Soleymani et al.

Summary: This article discusses the potential of using plants and natural compounds as effective resources against the novel coronavirus. New drug discovery strategies can include both prevention and treatment, with preventive mechanisms focusing on boosting the immune response and improving hygiene practices, and treatment mechanisms focusing on blocking virus entry and replication. Several medicinal plants and natural products have been found effective for COVID-19 prevention and treatment, making them promising targets for future research.

Demystifying Excess Immune Response in COVID-19 to Reposition an Orphan Drug for Down-Regulation of NF-κB: A Systematic Review

Apparao Peddapalli et al.

Summary: Immunological findings in COVID-19 patients indicate that excess immune response causing hyper-inflammation is the major cause of morbidity and mortality. A review of mechanisms in adult patients revealed that most lead to cytokine excess and NF-kappa B signaling up-regulation as a common pathway. Targeting these pathways, such as with histamine-conjugated normal human immunoglobulin, may provide a safer option for controlling inflammation in COVID-19.

被撤回的出版物: Parthenolide Augments the Chemosensitivity of Non-small-Cell Lung Cancer to Cisplatin via the PI3K/AKT Signaling Pathway (Retracted article. See vol. 9, 2021)

Li-Mei Wu et al.

Summary: Although cisplatin-based chemotherapy can improve the prognosis of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), chemotherapy resistance remains a major obstacle to curing the disease. Combining parthenolide (PTL) and cisplatin (DDP) has been shown to synergistically inhibit NSCLC growth by affecting the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway. This combination therapy may offer a new option for treating NSCLC.

Innate immune and inflammatory responses to SARS-CoV-2: Implications for COVID-19

Shea A. Lowery et al.

Summary: Severe disease from COVID-19 is characterized by significant immunopathology driven by unbalanced innate immune response with limited and delayed interferon response, leading to excessive proinflammatory cytokine production and cellular infiltrates in the respiratory tract causing lung pathology. Effective therapeutics for severe COVID-19 patients depend on understanding the pathological elements of this dysregulated innate immune response, as well as identifying therapeutic strategies targeting these elements of the innate response.
