Ovarian cancer today and tomorrow: A global assessment by world region and Human Development Index using GLOBOCAN 2020

Citadel J. Cabasag et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of the global burden of ovarian cancer and predicts the future burden, particularly in low Human Development Index (HDI) countries. It shows geographic variations in incidence and mortality rates, with higher burden in low HDI countries. The study highlights the need for global action to reduce the burden and inequality of ovarian cancer in access to quality cancer care and treatment.

Copper induces cell death by targeting lipoylated TCA cycle proteins

Peter Tsvetkov et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential cofactor for all organisms, but excessive copper can lead to cell death. We found that copper-dependent cell death mechanism is different from known mechanisms, and it is related to mitochondrial respiration. Copper directly binds to lipoylated components of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, causing protein aggregation and loss of iron-sulfur cluster proteins, ultimately leading to cell death.

Connecting copper and cancer: from transition metal signalling to metalloplasia

Eva J. Ge et al.

Summary: Copper is a essential nutrient with both beneficial and toxic properties to cells. Recent progress in transition metal signaling has led to new connections between researchers from different disciplines, with potential for translating basic research into clinical therapies for diseases. The relationship between copper and cancer is particularly important, with opportunities for leveraging disease vulnerabilities through copper-dependent signaling pathways.

Hepatocellular carcinoma

Josep M. Llovet et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), poses a significant global health challenge with rising incidence projected to exceed 1 million cases by 2025. Infection by hepatitis B and C viruses remains a major risk factor for HCC, while non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is emerging as a more common risk factor in Western countries. Advances in systemic therapies for HCC, including immunotherapies and targeted therapies, are expected to revolutionize the management of this disease.

Dual-purpose isocyanides produced by Aspergillus fumigatus contribute to cellular copper sufficiency and exhibit antimicrobial activity

Nicholas Raffa et al.

Summary: Fungi maintain the balance of metal micronutrient pools through various homeostasis mechanisms. Metabolites derived from the xan biosynthetic gene cluster in Aspergillus fumigatus bind copper, affect cellular copper content, and exhibit significant metal-dependent antimicrobial properties. These metabolites also demonstrate copper-dependent antimicrobial properties against a variety of human pathogenic fungi and bacteria.

Elevated DNA Polymerase Delta 1 Expression Correlates With Tumor Progression and Immunosuppressive Tumor Microenvironment in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Shuai Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed the significance of the POLD family in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and identified elevated POLD1 expression as a predictor of poor prognosis and immune-excluded tumor microenvironment in HCC patients. POLD1 could serve as a valuable biomarker for molecular diagnosis and targeted therapeutic strategies for HCC.

Tumor Immune Microenvironment and Immunosuppressive Therapy in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Review

Kyoko Oura et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, specifically hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), has the fourth highest mortality rate among all cancers worldwide. Despite advancements in systemic therapy, HCC still has a poor prognosis due to drug resistance, recurrence, and metastasis. Recent therapeutic strategies, such as cancer immunosuppressive therapy utilizing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and VEGF inhibitors, have shown promise in extending the lives of patients with advanced HCC.

CDC20 regulates the cell proliferation and radiosensitivity of P53 mutant HCC cells through the Bcl-2/Bax pathway

Shuai Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that CDC20 is highly expressed in HCC and is involved in radio resistance of HCC cells by affecting P53 mutation Bcl-2/Bax signaling pathway, enhancing the sensitivity of HCC to radiation therapy.
