Prevalence of cerebral amyloid angiopathy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: Reported prevalence estimates of sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) vary widely, with differences observed in AD patients and the general population. The study found that CAA prevalence based on pathology is higher than that based on presence of strictly lobar cerebral microbleeds. Both methods yield similar estimated prevalences in cognitively normal elderly, patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, and patients with lobar intracerebral hemorrhage. However, large heterogeneity among neuropathology and MRI protocols calls for standardized assessment and reporting of CAA.

Parenchymal border macrophages regulate the flow dynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid

Summary: The study reveals that parenchymal border macrophages (PBMs) are new cellular regulators of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics. PBMs drive CSF flow by regulating arterial motion and ensuring the smooth access of CSF to perivascular spaces. Decreased PBMs lead to accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins, blocking CSF flow and impairing perfusion and clearance in the central nervous system (CNS). Aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) affect the function of PBMs, which can be restored by intracisternal injection of macrophage colony-stimulating factor.

Depletion of PBMs through pharmacological or genetic means leads to obstruction of CSF access to perivascular spaces, impacting CNS perfusion and clearance.
