Effect of Baduanjin exercise on cerebral blood flow and cognitive frailty in the community older adults with cognitive frailty: A randomized controlled trial

Huiying Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Baduanjin exercise on cerebral hemodynamics in older adults with cognitive frailty. The results demonstrated that a 24-week Baduanjin exercise intervention could improve cerebral blood flow, enhance cognitive ability, and reduce physical frailty.

Subjective Cognitive Decline: Level of Risk for Future Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment, a Meta-Analysis of Longitudinal Studies

Kerryn E. Pike et al.

Summary: Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) is associated with an increased risk of developing dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Factors such as worry in the SCD definition, younger age, and recruitment source impact the risk of developing MCI, while they have little influence on the risk of developing dementia. Further research is needed to identify effective interventions for risk reduction and cognitive management in individuals with SCD.

Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI)

Tatjana Rundek et al.

Summary: Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is mainly caused by vascular risk factors and cerebrovascular disease, accounting for 20-40% of all dementia diagnoses. Cerebrovascular pathology is the most important contributor to dementia, with interactions with neurodegenerative pathology. Controlling vascular risk factors plays a key role in the prevention and treatment of VCI.

Therapeutic properties of multi-cannabinoid treatment strategies for Alzheimer's disease

Madilyn Coles et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive decline and behavioral impairment. The endocannabinoid system is affected in Alzheimer's disease and phytocannabinoids such as CBD and THC have shown therapeutic potential in ameliorating the pathologies associated with the disease. Using multi-cannabinoid formulations for treatment may be more effective than isolating individual cannabinoids.

Summary: The study found that the combined intervention of cognitive intervention and physical exercise has positive effects on cognition in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), showing better outcomes in global cognition, memory, and executive function/attention compared to single cognitive intervention or physical exercise groups.

Benefits of exercise training on cerebrovascular and cognitive function in ageing

Edward S. Bliss et al.

Summary: This review examines the effects of aging on cerebrovascular, cognitive, and neuroanatomical adaptations, as well as the potential benefits of exercise training in adults aged 50 and older. The evidence suggests that exercise can improve cerebrovascular function, cognition, and neuroplasticity in this age group, particularly in areas of the brain associated with executive function and memory, regardless of their health status. However, further research is needed to determine the mechanisms involved.

Summary: This study identifies consistent exercise-induced neuroplasticity in the hippocampus/parahippocampal area and cerebellum, highlighting the effectiveness of physical exercise in maintaining memory function in older adults. Specifically, changes in the medial/superior prefrontal cortex were associated with cognitive changes despite not reaching statistical significance.

One-Year Aerobic Exercise Reduced Carotid Arterial Stiffness and Increased Cerebral Blood Flow in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment

Summary: This study demonstrates that aerobic exercise training can improve central arterial stiffness, increase cerebral blood flow, and potentially influence cognitive function in patients with MCI. There are correlations between exercise, cerebral blood flow, and arterial stiffness.

Neurocognitive Plasticity Is Associated with Cardiorespiratory Fitness Following Physical Exercise in Older Adults with Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment

Galit Yogev-Seligmann et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of aerobic exercise intervention and cardiorespiratory fitness improvement on brain and cognitive functions in older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. The results showed increased brain activity and neural synchronization in the aerobic group, while the control group demonstrated decreased brain activity during memory encoding. Increases in cardiorespiratory fitness were associated with improvements in brain activation and performance on neuropsychological tests.

Resting state EEG biomarkers of cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment

Amir H. Meghdadi et al.

Summary: This study explored the utility of EEG measures as potential biomarkers for cognitive decline in AD and MCI, identifying increases in slow frequency power and coherence in AD, and proposing a novel Power Distribution Distance Measure (PDDM) to differentiate AD and MCI patients. The increase in slow frequency power opposed that of normal aging, while the decrease in Alpha band power in AD paralleled normal aging effects. The proposed PDDM showed enhanced significance and effect size in distinguishing MCI, with classifications achieving AUC = 0.85 for AD and AUC = 0.6 for MCI after cross-validation.

Exercise, Arterial Stiffness, and Cerebral Vascular Function: Potential Impact on Brain Health

Jill N. Barnes et al.

Summary: Exercise is associated with higher cognitive function and may help reduce the risk of dementia by improving vascular health. Age-related changes in arterial stiffness and pulse pressure, as well as reductions in peripheral vascular function, may impact brain health and cognition. More research is needed to understand how exercise directly influences cerebral vascular function and brain health.
