Event-based control of autonomic and emotional states by the anterior cingulate cortex

Jeremy K. Seamans et al.

Summary: Despite being a mystery, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is believed to be involved in cognitive functions, regulation of autonomic and emotional states, and the control of downstream regions. ACC neurons have diverse representations of task events, and neuromodulators regulate the strength of ensemble activity patterns, ultimately affecting downstream targets. Pathologies arise when specific event-related representations gain excessive control over autonomic/emotional states.

Cellular resolution anatomical and molecular atlases for prenatal human brains

Song-Lin Ding et al.

Summary: This study presents cellular-resolution digital anatomical atlases for prenatal human brain at different stages, providing a detailed and accurate reference for brain structure analysis. The atlases were annotated based on comprehensive analysis of cytoarchitecture, acetylcholinesterase staining, and marker gene expression dataset. The study also identified reliable marker genes and discovered novel developmental features.

A novel subdivision of the bed nucleus of stria terminalis in monkey, rat, and mouse brains

Song-Lin Ding

Summary: The bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BST) is an important structure that mediates sustained vigilant responses. Dysfunction of the BST may lead to excessive anxiety and hypervigilance. This study identifies a new BST subdivision, called BSTsc, which has unique inputs, cell morphology, and molecular signature compared to other BST subdivisions. The BSTsc appears to be a shortcut bridge linking spatial information to internal responses.

Chemoarchitecture of area prostriata in adult and developing mice: Comparison with presubiculum and parasubiculum

Sheng-Qiang Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemoarchitecture of the prostriata compared to PrSd/PoS or PaS in mice brains. The findings reveal differential gene expression, laminar expression patterns, and subdivisions in the prostriata. The study also identifies developing prostriata and observes gene expression differences between the prostriata and other regions. The molecular and connectional features of the prostriata in rodents and nonhuman primates are discussed and compared.

The human posterior cingulate and the stress-response benefits of viewing green urban landscapes

Dorita H. F. Chang et al.

Summary: The study found that viewing green urban landscapes is related to activity in the human ventral posterior cingulate cortex, which can affect behavioral stress responses and cognitive functions in the brain. The posterior cingulate cortex may regulate the impact of natural environments on stress responses by connecting with other regions of the brain, potentially having therapeutic effects.

Retrosplenial cortex in spatial memory: focus on immediate early genes mapping

Edyta Balcerek et al.

Summary: The ability to form, retrieve and update autobiographical memories is closely related to spatial memory, which involves various brain structures including the hippocampus and the retrosplenial cortex. The study of immediate early genes can provide insights into the formation of memory traces within the brain.

Rodent Area Prostriata Converges Multimodal Hierarchical Inputs and Projects to the Structures Important for Visuomotor Behaviors

Chang-Hui Chen et al.

Summary: The prostriata area in rats and mice receives inputs from multimodal cortical areas and subcortical regions, as well as direct afferents from the rostral part of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus. Its outputs mainly target subcortical visuomotor nuclei, suggesting its role in analyzing peripheral visual information and initiating adaptive visuomotor behaviors in response to looming threats.

The Orbitofrontal Cortex in Temporal Cognition

Juan Luis Romero Sosa et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of estimating the value of available options in decision-making, with subregions of the prefrontal cortex playing a crucial role. It emphasizes the complex integration of dimensions such as reward magnitude, effort, internal state, and time in value computations. Furthermore, it suggests that the orbitofrontal cortex may be a critical site for the integration of reward magnitude and delay, thus being important for temporal cognition.
