An early perceptual locus of absolute pitch

Vince S. H. Ngan et al.

Summary: In this study, the electroencephalography responses of AP possessors and non-AP possessors were analyzed, and it was found that there were differences in their responses to tones compared with noise stimuli. These findings are inconsistent with the predictions of the two-component model and suggest the existence of an early perceptual locus of AP.

Investigating the Relationship Between Childhood Music Practice and Pitch-Naming Ability in Professional Musicians and a Population-Based Twin Sample

Jane E. Bairnsfather et al.

Summary: The relationship between pitch-naming ability and childhood onset of music training is influenced by genetic factors and the amount of practice during this period. The study suggests that practice is a significant predictor of pitch-naming accuracy, regardless of the age of onset or genetic factors.

Use of explicit priming to phenotype absolute pitch ability

Jane E. E. Bairnsfather et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the phenotypic variability of absolute pitch (AP) using a novel explicit priming paradigm. The results showed that AP ability exhibited phenotypic variability, with some performers achieving high accuracy, some showing intermediate performance, and others performing at chance level. The performance profiles of intermediate performers were found to be either reliant on or independent of relative pitch strategies, as identified by the priming task. Additionally, a bimodal distribution of AP performance emerged under scoring criteria that assigned credit to semitone errors. These findings highlight the importance of methods in studying behavioral traits and contribute to the identification of AP phenotypes.

A new approach to measuring absolute pitch on a psychometric theory of isolated pitch perception: Is it disentangling specific groups or capturing a continuous ability?

Nayana Di Giuseppe Germano et al.

Summary: Researchers have different definitions and testing methods for absolute pitch, making it difficult to conduct comparative evaluations. The study adopts a psychometric perspective and evaluates the consistency and validity of testing absolute pitch ability through latent variable modeling. The results suggest that the measurement model for the perfect method has better fit, contradicting the usual division between AP and non-AP possessors.

Individual differences in human frequency-following response predict pitch labeling ability

Katherine S. Reis et al.

Summary: The FFR is a method used to study subcortical auditory encoding in humans, and can predict individual pitch labeling performance. Research shows that the FFR predicts pitch labeling performance better than traditional measures relating to pitch, and is particularly effective in predicting performance for piano tones.
