Evaluation of the Modulation Effects Evoked by Different Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation Frequencies Along the Central Vagus Nerve Pathway in Migraine: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study

Valeria Sacca et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the modulation effects of different frequencies of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on the central vagus nerve pathway in migraineurs. The results showed that 1-Hz and 20-Hz taVNS may modulate the static and dynamic functional connectivity of key nodes in the central vagus nerve pathway differently. These findings highlight the importance of stimulation parameters (frequencies) in taVNS treatment.

Comparative Effectiveness of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation vs Citalopram for Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Trial

Shaoyuan Li et al.

Summary: The study found that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is as effective as the commonly used antidepressant citalopram in treating major depressive disorder. Furthermore, taVNS showed significantly higher remission rates at week four and week six compared to citalopram.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) for migraine: an fMRI study

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that after 4 weeks of taVNS treatment, patients in the taVNS group had significantly reduced number of headache days, pain intensity, and migraine attack times. Functional connectivity analysis revealed that taVNS can increase the connectivity between the motor-related thalamic subregion and anterior cingulate cortex/medial prefrontal cortex, and decrease the connectivity between occipital cortex-related thalamic subregion and postcentral gyrus/precuneus.

Structural and Functional Brain Changes in Migraine

Summary: Individuals with migraine exhibit structural and functional changes in the brain, including white matter abnormalities, silent infarct-like lesions, and volumetric changes. Neuroimaging studies have helped characterize these changes, but limitations such as small sample sizes and poorly defined control groups exist.

Summary: This study found that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) at different frequencies has different modulation effects on the descending pain modulation system, demonstrating the significant role of stimulation frequency in taVNS treatment.
