The effect of age on CD4+T-cell recovery in HIV-suppressed adult participants: a sub-study from AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG) A5321 and the Bone Loss and Immune Reconstitution (BLIR) study

Jingxian Chen et al.

Summary: Older age may contribute to slower recovery of CD4+ T-cells in HIV-infected patients, with female patients showing a slower rate of memory T-cell elimination. Simulation results indicate that older patients on ART have lower CD4+ T-cell counts.

CRF07_BC is associated with slow HIV disease progression in Chinese patients

Jingrong Ye et al.

Summary: HIV subtype diversity in China, including CRF01_AE, CRF07_BC, and subtype B, is constantly evolving and gaining complexity. CRF07_BC is less pathogenic than subtype B, while CRF01_AE is as pathogenic as B. Age and transmission risk groups also play a role in the diagnosis and disease progression of AIDS.

Transmitted HIV-1 is more virulent in heterosexual individuals than men-who-have-sex-with-men

Ananthu J. James et al.

Summary: HIV-1 encounters a transmission bottleneck, which can differ between modes of transmission. By analyzing early CD4 counts, this study found that heterosexual individuals consistently had lower early CD4 counts than men who have sex with men (MSM), suggesting that transmitted/founder (T/F) strains of HIV-1 are more virulent in heterosexual individuals at the population level. These findings have implications for our understanding of HIV-1 pathogenesis, evolution, and epidemiology.

The Molecular Epidemiological and Immunological Characteristics of HIV-1 CRF01_AE/B Recombinants in Nanjing, China

You Ge et al.

Summary: HIV-1 CRF01_AE/B recombinants are spreading rapidly in Southern and Eastern China. CRF67_01B and CRF68_01B are the major strains of CRF01_AE/B recombinants in Nanjing, forming large transmission clusters between Nanjing and other provinces. CRF01_AE/B recombinants have a faster decline rate of CD4(+) T-cell count compared to CRF_07BC and lower probability of achieving immune reconstruction.

Evaluation of Clinical Biomarkers Related to CD4 Recovery in HIV-Infected Patients-5-Year Observation

Agnieszka Lembas et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate clinical biomarkers related to the recovery of CD4 and CD4:CD8 ratio in HIV-infected patients undergoing long-term antiretroviral therapy. The results showed that younger age, higher CD4 count, and starting therapy during acute HIV infection were associated with higher rates of CD4 normalization. Higher CD4:CD8 ratio normalization rates were correlated with higher CD4 count, high HIV viral load, and acute HIV infection. No statistically significant differences were observed in CD4 recovery depending on gender, coinfections, comorbidities, and opportunistic infections.

CRF01_AE and CRF01_AE Cluster 4 Are Associated With Poor Immune Recovery in Chinese Patients Under Combination Antiretroviral Therapy

Zhangwen Ge et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that CRF01_AE clades and clusters are associated with poor immune recovery in patients undergoing cART, mainly due to a high proportion of viruses with X4 tropism.

Prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in China: lessons from the past three decades

Jun-Jie Xu et al.

Summary: China has made progress in combating HIV/AIDS, including measures such as legislation and widespread nucleic acid testing to prevent infections and providing free ART treatment. In the future, efforts should focus on controlling the spread through sexual transmission, closing the gap in identifying HIV cases, and ensuring the long-term effectiveness and safety of ART.

Survival, CD4 T lymphocyte count recovery and immune reconstitution pattern during the first-line combination antiretroviral therapy in patients with HIV-1 infection in Mongolia

Solongo Bayarsaikhan et al.

Summary: Mongolia has a low incidence of HIV infection, but research on HIV/AIDS patients receiving ART in the country is still needed. This study found high survival rates and CD4 T cell recovery rates during ART among HIV/AIDS patients in Mongolia. Baseline CD4 T cell count was identified as a sensitive indicator for immune reconstitution.

Late presentation for HIV impairs immunological but not virological response to antiretroviral treatment

Marta Rava et al.

Summary: Late presenters may not achieve complete immunological response despite the safety and effectiveness of initial ART in terms of viral suppression. The class and specific first-line ART regimen can impact the effectiveness and safety in late presenters.

HIV/AIDS late presentation and its associated factors in China from 2010 to 2020: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Chengqing Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that patients aged 50 and above, married, with heterosexual contact as a risk factor for infection, and diagnosed in medical institutions were risk factors for late presentation in HIV/AIDS care. In areas with low HIV prevalence, patients aged 50 and above, married patients, and those diagnosed in medical institutions were more likely to present late than in high prevalence areas. Married patients and those diagnosed in medical institutions after 2015 have a lower risk of late presentation.
