A new clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza genotype detected in Europe in 2021

Alexander Nagy et al.

Summary: A new highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 genotype was detected in geese and ducks from a backyard farm in the Czech Republic. The Czech H5N1 virus retained the A/Eurasian_Wigeon/Netherlands/1/2020-like backbone but had an altered PB2 segment obtained from co-circulating low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses.

Emergence of clade 2.3.4.4b novel reassortant H5N1 high pathogenicity avian influenza virus in South Korea during late 2021

Mingeun Sagong et al.

Summary: Recent studies indicate that a novel H5N1 virus has been isolated from a captured mandarin duck in South Korea and a quail farm. These viruses are related to the clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses currently circulating in Europe, providing important insights for future control efforts.

Novel H5N6 reassortants bearing the clade 2.3.4.4b HA gene of H5N8 virus have been detected in poultry and caused multiple human infections in China

Wenli Gu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 15 H5N6 viruses isolated from poultry and seven H5N6 viruses isolated from humans, and found that they formed seven different genotypes derived from H5N8 viruses, domestic duck H5N6 viruses, and other previously circulating viruses in China. Two of these genotypes have caused human infections in multiple provinces.

Has Epizootic Become Enzootic? Evidence for a Fundamental Change in the Infection Dynamics of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Europe, 2021

Anne Pohlmann et al.

Summary: Phylogenetic evidence suggests the existence of at least two distinct reservoirs for the recent resurgence of high-pathogenicity avian influenza virus subtype H5N1 in European wild birds and poultry. This can be attributed to resident viruses in northern Europe and reintroduction of virus variants by migratory birds.

Pathobiological Origins and Evolutionary History of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Viruses

Dong-Hun Lee et al.

Summary: Over the past 60 years, 42 natural, independent H5 and H7 low-pathogenic avian influenza virus conversion events to highly pathogenic viruses have occurred in Europe, North America, Oceania, Asia, Africa, and South America. While most outbreaks were limited and eradicated, some outbreaks caused by H5Nx, H7N3, and H7N9 viruses continue to persist. Active surveillance and molecular detection efforts are crucial for early detection and eradication of these viruses in domestic birds.

Multiple Gene Segments Are Associated with Enhanced Virulence of Clade 2.3.4.4 H5N8 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus in Mallards

Christina M. Leyson et al.

Summary: The 2016 H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus showed increased virulence in mallards compared to the 2014 virus, with significant reductions in mortality observed with reassortants involving the PB2, NP, and M gene segments. These findings contribute to our understanding of the pathobiology of avian influenza viruses in waterfowl and have potential implications for the ecology and epidemiology of H5Nx HPAI in wild bird populations.
