Degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by water falling film DBD Plasma/Persulfate: Reactive species identification and their role in SMX degradation

Kefeng Shang et al.

Summary: The study shows that persulfate can enhance the degradation of sulfamethoxazole in a water falling film dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor, with PMS performing better than PDS. Increasing the applied voltage, solution pH, and PMS/PDS concentration promotes SMX degradation. The reactive species generated from the activation of PMS/PDS by discharge plasma play a key role in SMX degradation, with center dot OH and SO4 center dot- being particularly important.

Mechanism and process of sulfamethoxazole decomposition with persulfate activated by pulse dielectric barrier discharge plasma

Yawen Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) in water using pulse dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma activated persulfate (PS). The results showed that PS addition significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of SMZ in the pulse DBD plasma system. Active species played a role in the degradation process and the system conditions affected the degradation efficiency. The study also explored the degradation pathways and analyzed the impact of water matrix on SMZ degradation.

Degradation of anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone by pulsed corona discharge: The effect of peroxycompounds addition

Liina Onga et al.

Summary: The oxidation of anti-inflammatory dexamethasone in water using gas-phase pulsed corona discharge (PCD) with the addition of extrinsic oxidants was experimentally studied. The results showed that the degradation of dexamethasone was faster and more efficient in acidic media, and the combination of PCD and peroxydisulfate showed the highest removal efficiency. In groundwater matrix, the PCD/peroxydisulfate and PCD/hydrogen peroxide combinations demonstrated considerably faster degradation and mineralization of dexamethasone at higher efficiency.

Catalytic persulfate activation for oxidation of organic pollutants: A critical review on mechanisms and controversies

Na Chen et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the discussions and controversies regarding the radical and nonradical mechanisms of catalytic persulfate activation, as well as the identification methods. By investigating widely studied catalysts, this article aims to improve the understanding of catalytic PS-AOPs and provide a theoretical foundation for the development of novel PS-AOPs with better performance and specificity.

Effects of persulfate and hydrogen peroxide on oxidation of oxalate by pulsed corona discharge

Priit Tikker et al.

Summary: Experimental research found that in acidic media, the best oxidation effect of oxalate was achieved at a molar ratio of 1:0.5 between oxalate and persulfate when using gas-phase pulsed corona discharge (PCD). However, the synergism of PCD/PS combination decreased with increasing initial pH of the treated solution.

Elimination from wastewater of antibiotics reserved for hospital settings, with a Fenton process based on zero-valent iron

Francesco Furia et al.

Summary: The ZVI-Fenton process can effectively remove hospital reserved antibiotics from wastewater, helping fight against bacterial resistance. Operating at pH 5 offers several advantages compared to classic Fenton at lower pH values, making it suitable for practical applications.

Oxidation of ubiquitous aqueous pharmaceuticals with pulsed corona discharge

Vladimir Derevshchikov et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the energy-efficient gas-phase pulsed corona discharge for the oxidation of aqueous pharmaceuticals, showing promising results for ibuprofen, diclofenac, metformin, and tramadol. The oxidation energy efficiency was found to be influenced by alkaline pH, starting concentrations, and the molecular structure and hydrophobicity of the medications. The gas-phase pulsed corona discharge method demonstrated higher energy yields compared to other advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).

Fe2+ and UV Catalytically Enhanced Ozonation of Selected Environmentally Persistent Antibiotics

Andreja Zgajnar Gotvajn et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the oxidation potential of selected antibiotics to reduce environmental emissions. Indirect ozonation and photocatalytic oxidation with Fe2+ and UV radiation were found to be the most efficient methods, with high mineralization rates. Amoxicillin was the only drug completely mineralized, suggesting potential for improving efficiency in antibiotic removal processes using ozonation with Fe2+ and UV radiation.
