Solar-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of gCN/WS2 heterojunctions incorporated with the first-row transition metals

Eminegul Genc Acar et al.

Summary: The design of semiconductor-based heterojunctions is an effective strategy to build highly active photo-catalyst systems. In this study, tungsten disulfide (WS2) modified graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) hetero-junction (gCN/WS2) is incorporated with Co and Ni (gCN/WS2-Co and gCN/WS2-Ni) to enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of gCN/WS2 via performing a chemical reduction method and characterized by advanced analytical techniques. The improvement of photocatalytic activity and stability of gCN/ WS2-Ni and gCN/WS2-Co nanocomposites could be attributed to the 2D/2D heterojunction structure, extended light harvesting ability, increased electron-hole lifetime and decreased recombination rate of the charge carriers. Moreover, mechanistic studies revealed that a S-scheme heterojunction is attributed to the enhanced photocatalytic HER by the gCN/WS2-Ni and gCN/WS2-Co photocatalysts, which provides promoted efficiency by photocarrier transfer and separation.

Summary: This study presents an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of black phosphorus (BP) by utilizing the synergistic effect of heterojunction and interfacial lattice strain. Experimental results showed that a multilayered heterostructure induced strain in the interface between BP and nickel oxide (NiO), improving electron transfer efficiency and H* adsorption kinetics for the photocatalytic reaction. The BP-NiO heterostructure with strain effect exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic H-2 evolution activity, surpassing other reported noble-metal-free cocatalysts.

Metastable 1T′-phase group VIB transition metal dichalcogenide crystals

Zhuangchai Lai et al.

Summary: A general synthetic method for large-scale preparation of high-purity metastable 1T'-phase transition metal dichalcogenide crystals, including WS2, WSe2, MoS2, MoSe2, WS2xSe2(1-x) and MoS2xSe2(1-x), has been reported. The crystal structures of 1T'-WS2, -WSe2, -MoS2 and -MoSe2 were solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The as-prepared 1T'-WS2 showed thickness-dependent intrinsic superconductivity, demonstrating critical transition temperatures of 8.6 K for a thickness of 90.1 nm and 5.7 K for a single layer, attributed to its high intrinsic carrier concentration and semi-metallic nature. This synthesis method will facilitate a more systematic investigation of the intrinsic properties of metastable TMDs.
