Comparison of hydrocracking and cracking of pyrolytic lignin over different Ni-based catalysts for light aromatics production

Qinjie Cai et al.

Summary: This study compared the catalytic production of light aromatics from hydrocracking and cracking of pyrolytic lignin using different Ni-based catalysts. The performance of these catalysts was influenced by the original acidities of the supports and the interactions between the metal and supports, which affected depolymerization and deoxygenation. Ni and acid sites promoted depolymerization during cracking, but were less effective in deoxygenation. However, in hydrocracking, the cooperation of Ni and acid sites achieved efficient depolymerization and deoxygenation. Acid sites facilitated the cracking of linkages while Ni catalyzed hydrogenation. The micropore structure of the catalyst also favored the generation of light aromatics. Overall, hydrocracking over Ni/HZSM-5 with sufficient Ni and acid sites and a micropore structure resulted in the most effective conversion of pyrolytic lignin to light aromatics, especially aromatic hydrocarbons.

A review for lignin valorization: Challenges and perspectives in catalytic hydrogenolysis

Summary: This paper reviews the present status, advantages and disadvantages of catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin from two aspects of the solvent system and catalyst system. Solvents have been found to have a huge impact on the hydrogenolysis process and product distribution of lignin, the repolymerization of active intermediates is the main reason for char formation. It is proposed that the influence of different lignin structures should be fully considered in the catalyst design process, and the mechanism study of the hydrogenolysis process should focus on real lignin rather than model compounds.
