L-cysteine boosted Fe(III)-activated peracetic acid system for sulfamethoxazole degradation: Role of L-cysteine and mechanism

Yinhao Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, L-cysteine was used to enhance the Fe(III)/peracetic acid system for sulfamethoxazole degradation. The addition of L-cysteine significantly increased the degradation efficiency of the system. The role of L-cysteine in promoting sulfamethoxazole degradation was proposed and the degradation intermediates were identified. The L-cysteine/Fe(III)/PAA system showed good tolerance to Cl- and humic acid but was inhibited by HCO3-. The study provides a feasible strategy for enhancing the oxidation capacity of the Fe(III)/PAA system and an effective technique for the treatment of sulfamethoxazole in real waters.

Enhanced degradation of organic contaminants by Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate process with L-cysteine

Chengdu Qi et al.

Summary: This study introduced l-cysteine into Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process to improve its efficiency and application. The Cys/Fe(III)/PMS process, at room temperature, can effectively degrade various organic contaminants. The dominant reactive species involved in the Cys/Fe(III)/PMS process were identified as sulfate radical, hydroxyl radical, and ferryl ion (Fe(IV)), and several degradation pathways of acid orange 7 were proposed.

Elucidating the Mechanistic Origin of a Spin State-Dependent FeNx-C Catalyst toward Organic Contaminant Oxidation via Peroxymonosulfate Activation

Bofan Zhang et al.

Summary: Single-atom FeNx-C catalyst with Fe-pyridinic N-4 structure exhibited superior catalytic activity in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for organic contaminant oxidation. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy were used to validate various Fe species and their relative amounts in the catalyst. The study revealed positive correlations between relative content of high-spin state species and catalytic performance, providing insights into reactive species generation and electron transfer pathways in the FeNx-C/PMS system.

Unraveling timescale-dependent Fe-MOFs crystal evolution for catalytic ozonation reactivity modulation

Qian Hu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated an overlooked compromise between porous architecture and active site exposure of Fe-MOFs in modulating catalytic ozonation reactivity. By prolonging crystallization time, the surface area of MIL-53(Fe) decreased dramatically while the density of accessible active site increased, allowing for facile modulation of catalytic ozonation reactivity. MIL-53(Fe) with the highest reactivity could effectively degrade a broad spectrum of emerging and refractory organic pollutants, indicating its potential for environmental applications.

Enhanced degradation of sulfamethoxazole by microwave-activated peracetic acid under alkaline condition: Influencing factors and mechanism

Yinhao Dai et al.

Summary: This study used a microwave-activated peracetic acid system to remove sulfamethoxazole in water. The results showed that alkaline condition was more favorable for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole. Various factors, such as microwave power, reaction temperature, initial PAA concentration, and common coexisting substances, were systematically studied to understand their influence on the degradation process. The reaction was found to be dominated by a non-radical process, and four degradation pathways were proposed. The toxicity prediction indicated that sulfamethoxazole was converted into less toxic substances. This study provides important theoretical implications for the development of advanced oxidation processes for organic contaminants removal in water.

Accelerating Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle via Fe(II) substitution for enhancing Fenton-like performance of Fe-MOFs

Taoyu Yang et al.

Summary: The Fenton-like performance of Fe-MOFs was improved by manipulating the structure of iron-oxo nodes with Fe(II) substitution, resulting in a material with stronger active sites and higher density of Fe(III) coordinatively unsaturated iron centers. This enhancement facilitated the rapid activation of H2O2 and efficient degradation of pollutants.

Summary: A silicate-enhanced flow-through electro-Fenton system with a nanoconfined catalyst was designed and demonstrated for efficient, rapid, and selective degradation of antibiotic tetracycline. The system utilized Fe2O3 nanoparticle filled carbon nanotube filter to generate in situ H2O2 and convert it to reactive oxygen species for degradation. The presence of silicate electrolyte significantly boosted H2O2 yield and the flow-through configuration offered improved degradation kinetics compared to conventional batch reactors.

Respirometry tests in wastewater treatment: Why and how? A critical review

Matia Mainardis et al.

Summary: Respirometry tests are widely used in the field of wastewater treatment to characterize wastewater streams, assess toxic/inhibitory effects on biomass, and calibrate mathematical models. This method allows for the fractionation of chemical oxygen demand (COD), provides information on biomass kinetics and stoichiometry, and is useful for promptly assessing toxic effects in wastewater treatment plants. Respirometry has also been applied to innovative areas such as moving-bed bio-reactors, fungi, and microalgae, showing potential for natural remediation methods.
