Differentiation of Hodgkin lymphoma cells by reactive oxygen species and regulation by heme oxygenase-1 through HIF-1α

Makoto Nakashima et al.

Summary: This study found that Hodgkin lymphoma cells with low intracellular ROS levels in the small side population differentiate into large major population cells with high ROS levels. The hypoxic conditions led to upregulated genes and increased expression of HIF-1 alpha in the SP cells. HO-1 induction inhibited the effect of ROS, while HO-1 knockdown promoted ROS levels and cell differentiation in HL cells.

Impact of hypoxia on the pathogenesis and therapy resistance in multiple myeloma

Sho Ikeda et al.

Summary: Multiple myeloma is a refractory plasma cell tumor in which IRF4 and MYC play crucial roles in oncogenesis, while hypoxic response in the bone marrow microenvironment contributes to treatment resistance. Combination therapeutic strategies targeting both IRF4-MYC and HIF may be important for achieving deep remission in MM.

Hypoxia-induced ROS promotes mitochondrial fission and cisplatin chemosensitivity via HIF-1α/Mff regulation in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Kun Wu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that hypoxia promoted mitochondrial fission and CDDP sensitivity in HNSCC cells. Mff was found to be correlated with chemosensitivity in primary clinical samples under hypoxic conditions. Hypoxia induced release of ROS can promote mitochondrial fission and CDDP chemosensitivity via HIF-1 alpha/Mff regulation in HNSCC cells.
