Comparing Percolation and Alignment of Cellulose Nanocrystals for the Reinforcement of Polyurethane Nanocomposites

Alexandre Redondo et al.

Summary: The effects of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on the reinforcement mechanisms of thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) elastomer nanocomposites were studied. It was found that nanocomposite fibers exhibited higher stiffness and strength, while nanocomposite films displayed better mechanical properties at high CNC concentrations.

Melt processing of nanocomposites of cellulose nanocrystals with biobased thermoplastic polyurethane

Summary: Adding cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) to thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) can improve the thermal stability and mechanical properties of TPU, while also altering the crystallization kinetics of TPU. Untreated CNC leads to inefficient mixing, while treated CNC results in better performance in nanocomposites, including higher Young's modulus and toughness.
