Lateral quantum confinement regulates charge carrier transfer and biexciton interaction in CdSe/CdSeS core/crown nanoplatelets

Yige Yao et al.

Summary: By adjusting the core size and lateral quantum confinement, the charge carrier transfer rate from the crown to the core can be varied in CdSe/CdSeS core/alloy-crown nanoplatelets. In addition, the transfer can be affected by a carrier blocking mechanism. Moreover, the biexciton binding energy shows a non-monotonic variation with the emission wavelength due to the opposite effects of quantum confinement and electron delocalization. This work provides new insights into charge carrier transfer dynamics and exciton interactions in nanoplatelets and has potential applications in lasing, display, sensing, etc.

Ultralow-Threshold and High-Quality Whispering-Gallery-Mode Lasing from Colloidal Core/Hybrid-Shell Quantum Wells

Rui Duan et al.

Summary: This article presents an effective method for fabricating nanostructured whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) lasers by drop-casting CdSe/CdS@Cd1-xZnxS core/buffer-shell@graded-shell nanoplatelets (NPLs) dispersion onto silica microspheres. The room-temperature NPLs-WGM microlasers exhibit a record-low lasing threshold and stable single-mode laser output. Additionally, the Vernier effect through evanescent field coupling further optimizes the laser output performance.

Pushing the Emission Envelope for Full-Color Realization of Colloidal Semiconductor Core/Shell Nanoplatelets

Da-Eun Yoon et al.

Summary: In this study, CdZnSe/ZnS core/shell NPLs with significantly enhanced spectral tunability over a broad spectral range were synthesized. By carrying out a Cd-to-Zn direct cation exchange reaction on CdSe/ZnS core/shell NPLs, the composition of the emitting core was changed while maintaining the original shape of NPLs. As the core alloying proceeds, NPLs maintain excellent color purity and exhibit linearly polarized emission.

Controlled Core/Crown Growth Enables Blue-Emitting Colloidal Nanoplatelets with Efficient and Pure Photoluminescence

An Hu et al.

Summary: This study achieves near-trap-free blue-emitting nanoplatelets (NPLs) through controlled growth of the core/crown. The results show that deep trap states in NPLs can be effectively suppressed with asymmetrical crown growth and the growth of a small core and an alloyed symmetrical crown. This leads to NPLs with pure blue emissions and near-unity photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs).

Biexcitons in CdSe nanoplatelets: geometry, binding energy and radiative rate

David F. Macias-Pinilla et al.

Summary: The biexciton properties in semiconductor nanostructures are influenced by quantum confinement, electron-hole masses, dielectric environment, and Coulomb correlations. A variational Quantum Monte Carlo model coupled to effective mass Hamiltonians is used to analyze the biexciton ground state properties in colloidal CdSe nanoplatelets. The results show that the thickness of the nanoplatelets leads to a distorted tetrahedral shape of the biexciton, and the strong dielectric confinement affects both Coulomb attractions and repulsions. The ratio of biexciton-to-exciton binding energy is reduced, but the biexciton can still be stable at room temperature. The ratio of biexciton-to-exciton radiative rates decreases as the platelet area increases.

Optical Microfluidic Waveguides and Solution Lasers of Colloidal Semiconductor Quantum Wells

Joudi Maskoun et al.

Summary: This study presents a ultralow-threshold microfluidic single-mode laser using CdSe/CdS@CdxZn1-xS core/crown@gradient-alloyed shell colloidal semiconductor quantum wells (CQWs) dispersed in toluene as the microfluidic gain medium, achieving in-solution lasing with record-low thresholds. The high-quality Fabry-Perot cavity formed by SiO2 protected Ag mirrors contributes to the low thresholds, along with the core/crown@gradient-alloyed shell CQWs having giant gain cross-section and slow Auger rates. This microfabricated CQW laser serves as a compact and inexpensive coherent light source for microfluidics and integrated optics in the visible spectral region.

Ultrahigh Green and Red Optical Gain Cross Sections from Solutions of Colloidal Quantum Well Heterostructures

Savas Delikanli et al.

Summary: Researchers demonstrated highly efficient amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in solution using engineered CQWs heterostructures with low thresholds in red and green regions. The net modal gain of these CQWs is significantly higher than that of CQDs in solution, with gain cross sections two orders of magnitude larger than those of CQDs.

Colloidal quantum dot lasers

Young-Shin Park et al.

Summary: Semiconductor nanocrystals, also known as colloidal quantum dots, offer promising properties for optical-gain media that can be manipulated via colloidal techniques. Recent advances in understanding and controlling light amplification processes have led to breakthroughs in optically pumped continuous-wave lasing and development of novel dual-function electroluminescent devices that also function as optically pumped lasers. This review evaluates the state of colloidal quantum dot lasing and discusses challenges and opportunities in the field.

Self-Resonant Microlasers of Colloidal Quantum Wells Constructed by Direct Deep Patterning

Negar Gheshlaghi et al.

Summary: The study presents the first account of self-resonant fully colloidal mu-lasers made from colloidal quantum well (CQW) solution. A deep patterning technique is developed to fabricate well-defined high aspect-ratio on-chip CQW resonators, allowing for in-plane lasing with tight optical confinement. The method is also successfully applied to various nanoparticles without affecting their physical and chemical properties.
