Optimal traffic operation for maximum energy efficiency in signal-free urban networks: A macroscopic analytical approach

Mahyar Amirgholy et al.

Summary: The integration of artificial intelligence and wireless communication technologies enables the coordination of CAV platoons at signal-free intersections. This research focuses on enhancing energy efficiency by optimizing macroscopic traffic variables in these networks. The analytical model developed in this study provides insights into the relationship between energy loss and vehicular density in signal-free networks.

Balancing the efficiency and robustness of traffic operations in signal-free networks

Mahyar Amirgholy et al.

Summary: This research balances the efficiency and robustness of traffic operations by adjusting the platoon spacing in signal-free networks. A rule-based approach is used to express the coordination process as a set of governing equations and develop a stochastic model. The numerical results show that optimizing the system by adjusting the platoon spacing can improve robustness by 13% with a slight reduction in maximum capacity at the network level.

Network traffic instability with automated driving and cooperative merging

Ziyuan Gu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of connected and/or automated vehicles on network traffic stability due to turning and merging maneuvers. The results suggest that the presence of CAVs improves network flow stability when the turning probability is low, but AVs without cooperation worsen the stability when the turning probability is high. Additionally, the effectiveness of delaying NFD bifurcation is higher when the penetration rate of CAVs is moderate.

Fuel Economy-Oriented Vehicle Platoon Control Using Economic Model Predictive Control

Manjiang Hu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a distributed controller for vehicle platoon control based on vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The controller combines switching feedback control and economic model predictive control methods to optimize fuel consumption. Through the establishment of closed-loop dynamics and consideration of multiple-predecessor following communication topology, a local optimal control problem and a distributed EMPC algorithm are designed. Numerical simulations demonstrate a maximum fuel benefit improvement of 6.84% compared to pure tracking-oriented methods.

Competitive and cooperative behaviour analysis of connected and autonomous vehicles across unsignalised intersections: A game-theoretic approach

Hua Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates navigation strategies of two cross-moving connected and autonomous vehicles at an unsignalized intersection. Non-cooperative and cooperative game models are formulated, with results showing characteristics of pure-strategy Nash equilibria and the necessity for the optimal solution to the cooperative game to be in the NE solution set. The findings provide managerial insights for CAV operators and transport authorities, and propose an efficient algorithm for solving the models.
