Auxeticity modifications and unit cell doubling in Yukawa fcc crystals with [001]-nanochannels filled by hard spheres

Konstantin Tretiakov et al.

Summary: Research on auxetic materials is gaining attention for their various applications in enhancing mechanical properties. This study investigates the effect of nanoinclusions in auxetic metamaterials, specifically the Yukawa crystals with nanochannels. The results show that the presence of nanochannels can significantly affect the auxetic behavior of the crystals, and the properties are influenced by the type of nanochannels and pressure.

Influence of the Crystal Structure and Type of Interatomic Bond on the Elastic Properties of Monatomic and Diatomic Cubic Crystals

A. I. Epishin et al.

Summary: The dependence of elastic properties on crystal structure and interatomic bond is analyzed for monatomic and diatomic crystals. Two trends, covalent and ionic, are identified in the elastic properties of these crystals. Materials with a negative Poisson's ratio (auxetics) are found in certain monatomic and diatomic crystal structures.

Poisson's Ratio of f.c.c. Hard-Sphere Crystals with Cubic Supercells Containing Four Nanochannels Filled by Hard Spheres of Another Diameter

Jakub W. W. Narojczyk et al.

Summary: It has been found that a face centered cubic crystal with nanochannel arrays shows a significant decrease of its Poisson's ratio. Simulation study reveals that the auxetic properties vanish when the diameter of inclusion spheres is greater than that of the matrix spheres.

Metamaterial with sign-toggling thermal expansivity inspired by Islamic motifs in Spain

Teik-Cheng Lim

Summary: This article introduces a new metamaterial design that exhibits negative thermal expansion during heating and reverses into positive thermal expansion during cooling. The design is inspired by geometric patterns found at the Alhambra Palace and the Great Mosque of Cordoba and is created using bimetallic strips. The study shows that the effective coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the metamaterial is linearly correlated to the change in temperature.

Novel triangular auxetic honeycombs with enhanced stiffness

Reza Jafari Nedoushan et al.

Summary: The newly developed triangular auxetic honeycomb structure exhibits a negative Poisson's ratio and high stiffness, fabricated using a three-dimensional printing process. Finite element simulations showed that the structure has a negative Poisson's ratio in both longitudinal and transverse directions, with a high specific stiffness to specific density ratio.

Cancellation of Auxetic Properties in FCC Hard Sphere Crystals by Hybrid Layer-Channel Nanoinclusions Filled by Hard Spheres of Another Diameter

Jakub W. Narojczyk et al.

Summary: The paper explores the elastic properties of f.c.c. hard sphere crystals filled with nanoinclusions of another diameter. Modifications to the model structure were found to cause significant changes in elastic properties. Surprisingly, a hybrid inclusion composed of components that individually enhance auxeticity can completely eliminate it when the inclusion spheres reach a certain diameter. Computer simulations using the Monte Carlo method were used to conduct the study.

Teik-Cheng Lim

Summary: Inspired by the Maltese cross, a metamaterial capable of exhibiting both positive and negative coefficients of moisture and thermal expansion is presented, while also demonstrating auxetic properties. Effective models for moisture and thermal expansion coefficients were developed through a combination of rotational and translational motions.

Elastic Properties of Chiral Metallic Nanotubes Formed from Cubic Crystals

I. A. Bryukhanov et al.

Summary: The study explores the elastic properties of chiral metallic nanotubes rolled up from thin crystal plates with [011] and [111] orientations. It shows that the Poisson's ratio of nanotubes varies with the chiral angle and thickness, with some notable quantitative differences between different chiral metallic nanotubes. The findings are consistent with both anisotropic elasticity theory and molecular statics simulations.

Metamaterial honeycomb with sign-toggling expansion coefficients that manifests an Islamic mosaic pattern at the Alhambra Palace

Teik-Cheng Lim

Summary: Metamaterials have been designed with properties that switch between positive and negative coefficients depending on the external environment, inspired by Islamic geometric design. The constructed metamaterial shows linear relation between in-plane expansion coefficients and environmental changes. Additionally, the metamaterial exhibits positive and negative Poisson's ratios in different environmental conditions.
