Three-Dimensional Stability of Slopes under Water Drawdown Conditions

Qiujing Pan et al.

Summary: Slopes near reservoirs are at risk of collapse during water level fluctuations, causing significant financial losses. Traditional 3D upper-bound analysis methods do not provide rigorous estimations of slope stability due to their approximation of pore water pressure distribution. This study proposes a numerical approach to accurately determine the hydraulic head distribution of a slope under drawdown conditions, and incorporates it into a 3D rotational failure mechanism for upper-bound estimations of slope safety factors. Validation is conducted through a case study on a slope at the Three Gorges Reservoir, and different drawdown conditions are analyzed to assess their impacts on slope stability.

Pseudo-dynamic stability of rock slope considering Hoek-Brown strength criterion

Jun-Hao Zhong et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new method for evaluating the stability of rock slopes based on the Hoek-Brown strength criterion, incorporating a rotational failure mechanism and a modified pseudo-dynamic method. The stability of rock slopes is measured through optimization of 21 angle variables and a time variable, with stability charts provided for quick assessment in engineering applications. Comparisons with existing literature validate the rationality and accuracy of the proposed procedure.

Limit analysis for the seismic stability of three-dimensional rock slopes using the generalized Hoek-Brown criterion

A. Karrech et al.

Summary: The parameters and failure criteria that affect slope stability are well understood, but conservative design approaches can lead to excessive overburden removal and jeopardize profitability in open pit mining. Numerical methods are useful for identifying stable zones, but they are approximate and lack the ability to pinpoint critical factors without extensive parametric studies. Existing analytical approaches have not addressed slope stability using non-linear plasticity criteria and three-dimensional failure mechanisms. This paper bridges this gap by utilizing the yield design theory and the Hoek-Brown criterion, while also considering the effect of seismic forces.

Estimating the geological strength index and disturbance factor in the Hoek-Brown criterion using the acoustic wave velocity in the rock mass

Kaizong Xia et al.

Summary: This study develops a method to estimate GSI and D values using acoustic wave velocity, and proposes a new method for determining the mechanical parameters of the rock mass based on these improved values. The analysis results show that the method accurately reflects the factors affecting rock mass quality and disturbance, and its reliability is verified in practical engineering.

Effects of Soil Strength Nonlinearity on Slip Surfaces of Homogeneous Slopes

Di Wu et al.

Summary: The critical slip surface tends to be shallower gradually for slopes with a nonlinear strength criterion as the slope inclination increases. Compared with slopes with a linear strength criterion, the 3D effects on slope slip surfaces will be more remarkable for slopes considering soil strength nonlinearity.
