Towards maximum value creation from potato protein liquor: volatile fatty acids production from fungal cultivation effluent

Tugba Sapmaz et al.

Summary: This study focuses on producing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from low-grade residues in the potato starch industry through fungi biomass cultivation. It explores the effect of pH on VFA production and yield during acidogenic digestion. The results show the potential of sequential multi-step bioconversion to increase value-added products and enhance nutrient recovery from potato starch industry residues.

Improving bioenergy production in anaerobic digestion systems utilising chicken manure via pyrolysed biochar additives: A review

Tien Ngo et al.

Summary: There is increasing interest in using anaerobic digestion to treat organic waste and generate renewable energy. Livestock manure is the largest source of organic waste in most countries, but its high protein content poses challenges for anaerobic digestion. Various methods, including the addition of biochar, have been used to mitigate ammonia stress.

Enhancement of denitrification efficiency using municipal and industrial waste fermentation liquids as external carbon sources

Ali Mahmoud et al.

Summary: This study successfully used different carbon sources from wastewater for denitrification, and the results showed that the liquid fermentation filtrates had higher organic matter utilization efficiency and denitrification ability than conventional carbon sources, but their higher biomass yields may lead to higher sludge handling costs.

Sewage Sludge Biorefinery for Circular Economy

Daniele Cecconet et al.

Summary: The processing and disposal of sewage sludge have significant impacts on the energy and economic balances of wastewater treatment operations and greenhouse gas emissions. Recoverable resources, such as energy and useful molecules, exist in sewage sludge. The challenge is to recover energy and materials from the waste stream and implement a circular economy. Various options, including biological processes and biorefineries, are being explored. The paper discusses the state of the art of biorefinery and recent developments in non-conventional resource recovery for the implementation of a sludge-based circular economy.

Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) Production and Recovery from Chicken Manure Using a High-Solid Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR)

Dong Min Yin et al.

Summary: Acidogenic fermentation of chicken manure for production and recovery of volatile fatty acids is a promising waste-to-value approach. This study found that a high VFA yield can be achieved without pH control and under high organic loading rates, and enhanced hydrolysis and acidogenesis activities can be achieved at weak alkaline conditions. Long-term fermentation and filtration experiments showed that the AnMBR of chicken manure is a feasible and promising process for VFA production and recovery.

Tugba Sapmaz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential for removal of ammonium using a naturally occurring zeolite (clinoptilolite) from VFAs effluent recovered from an anaerobic membrane bioreactor. The results show that clinoptilolite has great potential for ion exchange and can effectively remove ammonium from the solution.

Enhance biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment process by adding food waste fermentation liquid as external carbon source

Xiao-Chi Feng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the feasibility of using food waste fermentation liquid to enhance biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment. Results showed that the added fermentation liquid could directly improve the removal efficiencies without prior treatment, and the optimal ratio of fermentation liquid to wastewater was 1/90. The high removal rates of PO4-P and NH4-N were mainly attributed to the extra volatile fatty acid and accumulated polyhydroxyalkanoates in anaerobic stage.
