Application of Circular Economy in Oil and Gas Produced Water Treatment

Marwa M. Waly et al.

Summary: This research aims to promote the circular use of constructed wetlands (CWs) in treating oil and gas produced water (PW) by investigating the use of industrial wastes as filtration materials. The study found that CWs can effectively remove contaminants from PW, with shredded tires and plastic as efficient filtration media. The research results contribute to the circular treatment of PW using CWs and the possibility of reusing the treated effluent in agriculture and irrigation.

Removal of organic pollutants in shale gas fracturing flowback and produced water: A review

Bin Tan et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the concentration and chemical composition of organic matter in shale gas flowback and produced water (FPW) in China, as well as the hazards of organic pollutants. Organic removal techniques, including advanced oxidation processes, coagulation, sorption, microbial degradation, and membrane treatment, are systematically reviewed. The influences of high salt on each technique are highlighted. The study concludes that integrated coagulation-sorption-Fenton-membrane filtration represents a promising treatment process for FPW.

The role of fluid-rock interactions in permeability behavior of shale with different pore fluids

Shugang Yang et al.

Summary: The permeability of shale plays a crucial role in fluid flow, solute transport, and overpressure development in sedimentary basins. This study investigated the effects of fluid-rock interactions on shale permeability using flow experiments on samples collected from the Carboniferous formation in the eastern Qaidam Basin, China. The experimental results showed that the permeabilities measured with different fluids varied significantly, with liquid CO2 having the highest permeability, followed by deionized water, and NaCl solution having the lowest permeability.

Influence of mineralogy and surfactant concentration on zeta potential in intact sandstone at high pressure

Faisal Ur Rahman Awan et al.

Summary: The study explored the zeta-potential of sandstones with different clay contents in the presence of brine, showing that clay-rich sandstone had lower zeta potentials than clay-poor sandstone at tested salinities. Surfactant SDBS was found to reduce zeta potential and increase repulsive forces, making the rock more hydrophilic. Additionally, electrophoretic zeta potentials were higher than streaming zeta potentials in the experiments.

Geological storage of CO2 and acid gases dissolved at surface in production water

J. K. Pearce et al.

Summary: The traditional method of geological CO2 storage involves injecting CO2 into a high permeability reservoir capped by a low permeability seal. Another method involves injecting CO2 dissolved in water, which can enhance storage security. Geochemical modeling on different reservoir rocks indicated the potential for both mineral trapping and dissolution trapping of CO2 over time.

Assessing cumulative water impacts from shale oil and gas production: Permian Basin case study

Bridget R. Scanlon et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impacts of oil and gas production on groundwater and surface water, using the Permian Basin as a case study. Results showed a peak in water demand for hydraulic fracturing in 2019, with concerns about potential groundwater depletion and leakage risks from abandoned wells. The state monitoring system was found to be insufficient to address local impacts, indicating the need for improved management approaches.

The coupling effects of pore structure and rock mineralogy on the pre-Darcy behaviors in tight sandstone and shale

Shugang Yang et al.

Summary: The pore structure and mineral composition have a significant impact on the water flow behavior in low-permeability media. Both clay minerals and brittle minerals affect the pre-Darcy flow parameters in opposite ways. Experimental and theoretical analysis reveal that immovable water and electro-viscous effect play a key role in deviating water flow from Darcy's law.

Fuzzy logic for control of injector wells flow rates under produced water reinjection

Rewbenio A. Frota et al.

Summary: Production water reinjection (PWRI) is a mandatory practice for waste disposal, but it is associated with severe injectivity decline. This paper proposes a data-driven strategy based on machine learning and fuzzy logic to determine injection rates for wells, providing a potential solution to maintaining injectivity levels while maximizing injection rates.

New insights into the beneficial use of coalbed-associated water: A feasibility study of co-produced water reinjection to coalbeds

Xiao-Long Peng et al.

Summary: Coalbed methane development is accompanied by the emission of associated water, which, if not properly treated, poses a great threat to the environment and human health. This study explores the feasibility of reinjecting the produced water into the original coalbed and analyzes the effect of different water injection parameters on gas production using reservoir numerical simulation.

Water Blocking Damage Evaluation and Mitigation Method in Tight Gas Reservoirs

Chengwei Wang et al.

Summary: The water lock phenomenon in tight sandstone gas reservoirs has a significant impact on gas well productivity. Understanding the mechanism of water lock damage is important for improving productivity. This study investigates the pore structure characteristics and water lock effect in tight sandstone reservoirs. A productivity equation is developed, considering slippage, stress sensitivity, and the water lock effect. The study also explores the reservoir flow law and its impact on productivity. Experimental results show that introducing chemicals into the formation is an effective method for repairing water lock damage.
