Ecosystem Services Trade-Offs and Synergies following Vegetation Restoration on the Loess Plateau of China

Shutong Yang et al.

Summary: The Loess Plateau is a heavily soil-eroded area, and the Chinese government has implemented the Grain for Green Project to increase vegetation coverage. Understanding the temporal and spatial variation of ecosystem services in the region is crucial for re-vegetation and watershed management. This study analyzed the changes in carbon storage, soil conservation, and water yield in three watersheds using the InVEST model. The results showed positive trends in ecosystem services and trade-offs among different services.

The Interaction of Aeolian Sand and Slope on Runoff and Soil Loss on a Loess Slope via Simulated Rainfall under Laboratory Conditions

Zongping Ren et al.

Summary: This study conducted experiments in the wind-water erosion crisscross region and found that the increase of sand cover slope has an impact on runoff and soil loss characteristics. The critical slope of sand-covered slopes is approximately from 23 degrees to 28 degrees, indicating that wind effect is more important than the terrace factor in soil water erosion.

Effects of a check dam system on the runoff generation and concentration processes of a catchment on the Loess Plateau

Shuilong Yuan et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of check dams on the hydrologic process in a typical Loess Plateau catchment. The results showed that check dams reduced peak discharge and flood volume, extended flood duration, and decreased the runoff coefficient. The study provides a theoretical basis for evaluating the effects of numerous check dams on regional hydrology and water resources on the Loess Plateau.

Spatiotemporal variations and driving factors of the potential wind erosion rate in the Hexi region, PR China

Jinkuo Lin et al.

Summary: Accurate evaluation of wind erosion dynamics and understanding their driving mechanisms is crucial for reducing damage caused by wind erosion. This study in the Hexi region of China from 1982 to 2015 found a significant decrease in potential wind erosion rates, primarily influenced by climatic factors and land use patterns, with wind speed being the main factor controlling the intensity of wind erosion.

Sand cover enhances rill formation under laboratory rainfall simulation

Zongping Ren et al.

Summary: The research found that sand cover treatment changed the runoff generation mechanism from infiltration-excess runoff to subsurface saturation-excess runoff, delaying runoff initiation and increasing runoff volumes and soil loss compared to the control. Rill erosion on sand-covered slopes was dominated by shallow and wider rills, while on loess slopes it was dominated by narrow and deeper rills. The presence of a sand layer over less pervious loess soil promoted return flow and accelerated rill formation and development.

Have land use and land cover change affected soil thickness and weathering degree in a subtropical region in Southern Brazil? Insights from applied mid-infrared spectroscopy

Liesa Brosens et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of land use and land cover changes on soil thickness and weathering degree, finding that land use only has a minor effect on these factors. The research also indicates that slope gradient is the main factor influencing spatial variability in soil thickness and weathering degree.

Temperature changes and elevation-warming relationships in the Carpathian Mountains

Dana Magdalena Micu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between elevation and warming across the Carpathian Mountains over a 50-year period. The results showed that temperature increase is more pronounced in the lowlands of the region, and there are both positive and negative correlations between elevation and warming rates in different parts of the mountains.

Recent land cover changes in the Southwestern US lead to an increase in surface temperature

Tomer Duman et al.

Summary: The study predicts the impact of two extensive land cover changes in the Southwestern US on surface temperature using observational data, suggesting that shrub encroachment and tree mortality may lead to a 1 to 2 degree Celsius increase in midday surface temperature. Different biophysical properties drive the temperature change in each scenario, with tree mortality affecting aerodynamic conductance the most and reduced albedo and canopy conductance driving the increase in surface temperature following shrub encroachment. The increase in daytime surface temperature could be further intensified with future climate scenarios, particularly with the expected reduction in soil water availability in the Southwest.

Aggravated risk of soil erosion with global warming - A global meta-analysis

Xiaofei Ma et al.

Summary: Climate warming has a variable impact on global soil erosion, with an overall increase observed primarily in semiarid areas. Different soil erosion models yield significantly different simulation results, with the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation and Wind Erosion Equation models showing the highest accuracy for water and wind erosion simulations. The driving factors behind soil erosion under climate warming are still uncertain and further research is needed to study the interactions between climate warming and soil erosion, especially in wind erosion models, as well as consider the relationship between the UN Sustainable Development Goals and soil erosion.

Characteristics and causes of surface wind speed variations in Northwest China from 1979 to 2019

Jing Ge et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the surface wind speed in Northwest China underwent two-stage changes from 1979 to 2019, primarily influenced by the meridional temperature gradient. The decadal strengthening of the East Asian winter monsoon may have led to an increase in surface wind speed in Northwest China after 2000.

Summary: This study reveals a warming pause of wind chill temperature in China in the 21st century, indicating that the slowdown or decrease of human bioclimatic temperature in recent two decades may lead to an increasing risk of frostbite and other cold-related diseases.

Erosion around a large-scale topographic high in a semi-arid sedimentary basin: Interactions between fluvial erosion, aeolian erosion and aeolian transport

M. Jolivet et al.

Summary: In semi-arid basins, the geomorphic evolution is influenced by interactions between fluvial erosion, aeolian erosion, and the presence of erosion-resistant basement outcrops. The occurrence of non-erodible basement in deflation zones complicates drainage systems and wind-flow patterns, leading to rapid topographic modifications over time.

Effects of soil conservation measures on wind erosion control in China: A synthesis

Liangang Xiao et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of soil conservation measures (SCM) in reducing wind erosion in major eroded regions of China. It was found that SCM, particularly vegetation measures, can significantly reduce wind erosion. The effectiveness of SCM varied under different environmental conditions, with multiple factors such as precipitation, temperature, and soil type influencing the outcomes.
