Towards a sustainable viticulture: The combination of deficit irrigation strategies and agroecological practices in Mediterranean vineyards. A review and update

Pascual Romero et al.

Summary: This study reviews different physiologically-based water-saving irrigation strategies and methods, and discusses how integrating these practices with sustainable soil management and agroecological practices can enhance efficiency, quality, and resilience in Mediterranean vineyards. Analysis includes deficit irrigation strategies, latest advances in regulated deficit irrigation and partial root zone drying, and other less common irrigation methods to improve water use efficiency and quality in vineyards. The research also explores sustainable soil management practices and their potential benefits in creating more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems in semi-arid areas.

Low-cost Edge Computing devices and novel user interfaces for monitoring pivot irrigation systems based on Internet of Things and LoRaWAN technologies

Diego Mateos Matilla et al.

Summary: The increase in irrigated crop areas has led to the development of technological solutions for monitoring irrigation. This paper presents low-cost solutions using novel user interfaces and wireless communication technologies for monitoring irrigation systems. The solutions need to consider the digital divide and be attractive to users. The paper presents the results and main conclusions after deploying the proposed systems and using them in irrigated maize crops.

Water Governance in Mediterranean Farming Systems through the Social-Ecological Systems Framework-An Empirical Case in Southern Portugal

Taiana Homobono et al.

Summary: Water governance in the Mediterranean context is a major challenge, and any efforts towards sustainability require a holistic understanding of the challenges and interactions among actors involved. This study examines water governance in the farming sector of three municipalities in southern Portugal using the social-ecological systems (SES) framework. The study identifies the lack of integrated strategies for development and communication among actors as key factors affecting water governance.

Regulated Deficit Irrigation and Its Effects on Yield and Quality of Vitis vinifera L., Touriga Francesa in a Hot Climate Area (Douro Region, Portugal)

Ines L. Cabral et al.

Summary: The study suggests that regulated deficit irrigation can have favorable effects on vine performance in the face of climate change challenges, but further research is needed to understand its consistent impact on yield and berry composition.
