Modeling imbibition coreflooding in heterogeneous cores with sub-core scale hysteresis

Evans Anto-Darkwah et al.

Summary: This study conducted drainage and imbibition experiments on two heterogeneous core samples using computed tomography imaging. Two hysteresis models were proposed, with the sub-core model accurately capturing the experimental data by introducing unique capillary pressure and relative permeability for each grid block.

Enhanced infiltration of fuel-contaminated hydrophobic unsaturated soil by hydrogen peroxide using surfactant, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and phytate

Prakash Gautam et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of pretreatment with chelators to improve the stability of H2O2 in hydrophobic and fuel contaminated soil. The findings showed that pretreatment facilitated H2O2 infiltration and resulted in effective removal of diesel oil from the soil. This study provides valuable insights into the remediation process of soil through chemical oxidation after natural H2O2 infiltration.

Impact of Sub-core-scale Heterogeneity on Meter-Scale Flow and Brine Displacement in Drainage by CO2

Z. Moreno et al.

Summary: This study investigates CO2-brine two-phase flow in a cubic rock incorporating sub-core heterogeneity. Results show significant impact of gravity and capillary heterogeneity on saturation and brine trapping in low capillary pressure regions. The study presents a correlation between trapping and permeability statistical parameters, as well as the Bond number characterizing gravity and capillary effects.

The promise and challenges of utility-scale compressed air energy storage in aquifers

Chaobin Guo et al.

Summary: Compressed air energy storage in aquifers (CAESA) is gaining attention as a potential method to address the intermittency of solar or wind energy sources. While some field tests show the possibility of creating a large bubble in aquifers to sustain working cycles, challenges still exist before wide deployment can be recommended. Methods to improve CAESA efficiency, such as combining with thermal storage, using CO2 as cushion gas, horizontal wells or hydraulic fracturing, and man-made boundaries, need further study for future applications.

Surfactant-enhanced remediation of oil-contaminated soil and groundwater: A review

Jian-Wu Liu et al.

Summary: Oil leakage during extraction, processing, transportation, and storage can seriously damage the soil and groundwater environment. Surfactants play a crucial role in enhancing the remediation of oil-contaminated sites by reducing surface tension, improving contact efficiency of contaminants, and suppressing tailing and rebound effects. Different types of surfactants offer diverse options for remediation, with biosurfactants and mixed surfactants being particularly effective and worth attention. Adsorption of surfactants on soils and aquifer sediments should be minimized to avoid decreased remediation efficiency and potential secondary pollution.

Semi-Analytical Modeling of Rate-Dependent Relative Permeability in Heterogeneous Formations

Ziv Moreno et al.

Summary: Relative permeability is an important property for characterizing multi-phase flow in porous media, and its rate dependence requires experiments at different flow rates for full characterization. This study presents a new method based on a 1D semi-analytical solution to calculate rate dependent effective k(r) curves, showing applicability for a wide range of flow rates.

A general capillary equilibrium model to describe drainage experiments in heterogeneous laboratory rock cores

Takeshi Kurotori et al.

Summary: Macroscopic observations of two-phase flow in porous rocks are strongly influenced by heterogeneities at small length scales, making it important to consider capillary equilibrium models and dual-porosity media. By studying a limestone core, it was found that spatial variations in S-ir can serve as a proxy for microporosity heterogeneity, exerting potential next-to-leading order controls on observed fluid saturation distribution.

Evaluating numerical simulation errors of CO2-brine flow with capillary heterogeneity using a 1D semi-analytical solution

Ziv Moreno et al.

Summary: Modeling CO2-brine flow related to CO2 storage in saline aquifers requires intensive numerical simulations. One key aspect is residual trapping for safe storage, which relies on incorporating capillary heterogeneity. Results from comparing two numerical simulators with a semi-analytical solution show that errors increase with smaller capillary numbers, reaching 25-50% in many cases. Additionally, errors are found to be related to capillary heterogeneity and increase with larger variance of log permeability, leading to a proposed new approach for predicting numerical errors.

Simulating Core Floods in Heterogeneous Sandstone and Carbonate Rocks

Nele Wenck et al.

Summary: The study evaluated a workflow for characterizing capillary heterogeneities in complex rocks and found that the success of the workflow is primarily determined by the resolution of heterogeneous structures in X-ray imagery. The performance of the workflow systematically improved with increasing characteristic length scales of heterogeneities. The findings showed non-monotonic behavior in upscaled relative permeability due to isotropic heterogeneity in carbonate samples that initially increased and subsequently decreased with increasing flow rate.
