Analysis of the Clinical Pipeline of Treatments for Drug-Resistant Bacterial Infections: Despite Progress, More Action Is Needed

Mark S. Butler et al.

Summary: There is an urgent global need for new strategies and drugs to control and treat multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. The World Health Organization has identified antibiotic-resistant priority pathogens and critically analyzed the antibacterial clinical pipeline. While new antibacterial drugs are being developed, there is still a lack of clinically differentiated agents.

Non-prescription acquisition of antibiotics: Prevalence, motives, pathways and explanatory factors in the Swedish population

Christian Munthe et al.

Summary: The prevalence of unregulated non-prescription use of antibiotics in Sweden is investigated in this study. The results show that 2.3% of the respondents have acquired antibiotics in ways other than from a Swedish physician, and 4.3% reported that they are likely to do so in the future. The main reasons for non-prescription acquisition are physicians' refusal to prescribe antibiotics and travel abroad. The trust in health care is found to be strongly associated with non-prescription acquisition of antibiotics and the intention to engage in this practice in the future.

Towards the sustainable discovery and development of new antibiotics

Marcus Miethke et al.

Summary: There is a growing demand for novel antimicrobials to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens, but there is currently a lack of investment in this field. New agents with innovative chemistry and modes of action are urgently needed to combat the public health threat posed by antimicrobial resistance. The consortium proposes short-term and long-term solutions to overcome urgent limitations in research and funding, aiming to bridge the gap between academic, industrial, and political stakeholders to improve the ability to discover and develop new antibiotics.
