Zinc (Zn) mitigates copper (Cu) toxicity and retrieves yield and quality of lettuce irrigated with Cu and Zn-contaminated simulated wastewater

Sana Ullah et al.

Summary: This study suggests that zinc supplementation can mitigate the negative effects of copper toxicity on the growth and quality of lettuce irrigated with copper-contaminated wastewater. Adding zinc to the wastewater improved plant growth, quality, and copper tolerance of lettuce.

Heavy metal distribution profiles in soil and groundwater near pig farms in China

Na Li et al.

Summary: Intensive pig farming, which heavily relies on the use of heavy metal additives, poses a threat to the environment. This study analyzed the distributions of Cu, Zn, and Cd near pig farms in Beijing and Hefei, China. The results showed elevated levels of these heavy metals compared to local background values, indicating potential ecological risks. However, no significant correlation was found between heavy metals and bacterial community composition in the soils. The groundwater near these farms was deemed safe for drinking.

Chemical composition and risk assessment of spring barley grown in artificially contaminated soil

Karolina Barcauskaite et al.

Summary: A model contaminated system was developed to investigate the bioaccumulation of naphthalene and its effect on the mineral composition of spring barley grain and straw. Results showed that high concentrations of naphthalene reduce barley germination and affect plant growth, leading to decreased grain quality. Furthermore, differences in mineral content were observed between barley grain and straw.

The evaluation of immobilization behavior and potential ecological risk of heavy metals in bio-char with different alkaline activation

Bing Zhao et al.

Summary: Bio-char with multilevel pore structure was prepared by chemical activation to immobilize heavy metal pollutants. KOH activation showed better immobilization effect, while K2CO3 activation had more noticeable effects on leaching behavior. Under optimal pyrolysis temperature, the ecological risks of bio-char significantly decreased.

Adaptation of Arabidopsis halleri to extreme metal pollution through limited metal accumulation involves changes in cell wall composition and metal homeostasis

Massimiliano Corso et al.

Summary: Metallophytes, such as A. halleri, exhibit significant variation in metal tolerance and accumulation due to differential expression of transporter genes and cell wall components in response to metal-contaminated environments. The metallicolous population showed increased tolerance to and reduced hyperaccumulation of Zn, limited accumulation of Cd, and altered metal homeostasis compared to the nonmetallicolous population, suggesting the involvement of specific cell wall components and transporter genes in limiting metal accumulation.

Biofuel ash granules as a source of soil and plant nutrients

Kristina Buneviciene et al.

Summary: Biofuel production and bioenergy generation play significant roles in energy self-sufficiency of countries and climate change mitigation. However, it also leads to waste accumulation, with biofuel ash and lime kiln dust being the main wastes of biomass burning. This study evaluated the potential use of these wastes as fertilizers for agricultural crops, finding that the use of granulated ash led to increased potassium and calcium content in spring barley straw. While the concentrations of heavy metals in the soil did not significantly change, the levels of microelements such as cadmium and zinc increased with higher biofuel ash content.

Effects of fine fractions of soil organic, semi-organic, and inorganic amendments on the mitigation of heavy metal(loid)s leaching and bioavailability in a post-mining area

Zahra Derakhshan Nejad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different soil amendments on the physicochemical properties of soil and the bioavailability of heavy metal(loid)s in the presence of lettuce. The results showed that amendments significantly influenced soil EC, CEC, and pH, and reduced the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in plant tissues. Maple-derived biochar combined with revegetation was found to effectively immobilize heavy metals and promote plant growth in post-mining areas.
