External sodium acetate improved Cr(VI) stabilization in a Cr-spiked soil during chemical-microbial reduction processes: Insights into Cr(VI) reduction performance, microbial community and metabolic functions

Rong Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of external sodium acetate (SA) in improving Cr(VI) reduction and stabilization in Cr(VI)-spiked soils. Batch experiments showed that the addition of SA resulted in a decline in soil Cr(VI) content and an increase in the relative abundances of Cr(VI)-reducing microorganisms. Redundancy analysis indicated that pH and SA were the predominant factors affecting the microbial community. Functional prediction suggested that the addition of SA had a positive effect on the metabolism of key substances involved in Cr(VI) microbial reduction.

Effects of fragmentation on grassland plant diversity depend on the habitat specialization of species

Yongzhi Yan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impacts of habitat loss and fragmentation on grassland plant species richness in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China. The results showed that habitat loss had a negative effect on overall species richness and grassland specialist richness, but a positive effect on weed richness. Additionally, the increase in patch density caused by habitat loss had a positive effect on overall species richness and grassland specialist richness. These findings highlight the importance of adding habitat patches in fragmented landscapes for conserving habitat specialists.

Fine root biomass and morphology in a temperate forest are influenced more by the nitrogen treatment approach than the rate

Wen Li et al.

Summary: Global nitrogen deposition has had significant impacts on the production and morphology of fine roots in forests, affecting the distribution of carbon. The study found that the N treatment approach and sampling time significantly influenced fine root biomass and morphology. Canopy N addition increased fine root biomass, while understory N addition may decrease it, with fine root biomass being most affected by NH4-N and NO3-N in July. Different N treatment approaches led to varying results, with the effects of understory N addition on fine root biomass potentially being overestimated compared to canopy N addition.

Yi Ding et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of abiotic and biotic variables on aboveground biomass (AGB) in tropical, subtropical, and temperate forests in China. It found that factors such as elevation and species diversity played important roles in determining AGB variation in different climatic zones, with abiotic factors being more dominant in temperate forests.

Stand structure determines aboveground biomass across temperate forest types and species mixture along a local-scale elevational gradient

Farman Ullah et al.

Summary: The study found that stand density and individual tree size variation in single-species dominated stands are key factors affecting aboveground biomass in most temperate forests. The positive effects of stand density and species richness on aboveground biomass may provide support to the niche complementarity effect, while the greater effect of individual tree size variation on aboveground biomass in single-species rather than multi-species dominated stands may also confirm the selection or competitive exclusion effect.

Amjad Ur Rahman et al.

Summary: The study assessed plant diversity, abundance and their relationships with multiple factors in the Humid Forest Ecosystem of the Western Himalayas. The integrative modeling approach showed that species abundance is significantly influenced by soil nutrients, topography, and disturbance factors. Edaphic factors were found to cause variations in the abundance of certain plant species over others.
