Exploring the role of the Amazon effect on customer expectations: An analysis of user-generated content in consumer electronics retailing

Agostino Vollero et al.

Summary: This paper aims to identify key triggers for the 'Amazon effect' by analyzing consumer comments on social media. The findings reveal a wide diffusion of consumer comments and service complaints associated with the Amazon effect on consumer electronics retailers, particularly regarding price, customer service, in-store staff, and post-purchase support. The negative sentiments expressed in consumers' comments suggest that Amazon's service standards have raised consumer expectations and decreased satisfaction when interacting with other retailers.

Summary: This study investigates the factors that influence consumer trust and purchase intention in omnichannel retailing, using an extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB) model. The results show that both personal attitudes towards omnichannel retailing and technology characteristics can influence user acceptance. The practical implication is that retailers should consider the psychological needs and attitudes of their customers before implementing omnichannel tools. More empirical research is needed to understand the consumer decision-making process in omnichannel retailing, particularly since it is a relatively new retail strategy.
