The costs of regulatory barriers to trade in services: New estimates of ad valorem tariff equivalents

Sebastian Benz et al.

Summary: This paper estimates policy-induced trade costs in five services sectors for 46 countries using structural gravity. Despite services trade having tripled in the last two decades, the results show that trade costs remain high. The estimates highlight the potential for services trade liberalisation and can support trade policy modelling.

A structural quantitative analysis of services trade de-liberalization*

Sven Blank et al.

Summary: This study proposes a quantifiable multi-country-multi-sector model of trade in goods and services, taking into account the market penetration by firms and the impact of iceberg costs and market-entry costs on trade. The findings show that preferential market access for services through trade agreements can significantly reduce the overall costs of services trade. However, if all countries abandon existing preferential market access, it would lead to a decrease in real consumption, real wages, and dividends, with adverse spillover effects on manufacturing.

The impact of special economic zones on producer services productivity: Evidence from China

Qiangmin Xi et al.

Summary: The study shows that the productivity advantages of producer services in SEZs mainly come from agglomeration effects, which are positively correlated with the local manufacturing scale and result from the high industrial relevancy between producer services and the leading manufacturing industry. Additionally, although preferential policies in SEZs attract more firms to enter, it also leads to a high proportion of inefficient firms joining in, negatively impacting the productivity of producer services.
