Advancing water footprint assessments: Combining the impacts of water pollution and scarcity

Eleonore Pierrat et al.

Summary: Several water footprint indicators have been developed to address the issues of freshwater stress. Volumetric footprints focus on water allocation and productivity, while impact-oriented footprints aim to minimize the negative effects of water use on human health, ecosystems, and freshwater resources. However, challenges in combining these perspectives remain, such as pollution and ecosystem impact modeling. To bridge these gaps, a water footprint assessment framework is proposed, incorporating regionalized indicators for water biodiversity and water resource, and complemented with a sustainability assessment. The framework is tested on the water use sustainability in the European Union, revealing the need for concerted efforts in reducing the impacts of emissions and water consumption.

Drivers of the increasing water footprint in Africa: The food consumption perspective

Alexandre Tuyishimire et al.

Summary: Water resources in Africa are closely linked to sustainable development goals, and water footprint and decomposition methods provide insights for water resource management. The study found that food consumption water footprint in Africa has been increasing, mainly driven by population growth, food consumption, and consumption structure. Controlling population growth and improving water efficiency are effective measures to alleviate water-related pressures on food consumption. In addition, promoting a healthy dietary structure is also necessary.

Effects of urbanisation on regional water consumption in China

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Water shortages are a growing concern globally, and the concept of water footprint provides a new method to evaluate regional water consumption. This study evaluates the level of urbanization for provinces in China and analyzes its impact on regional water footprints from both production and consumption perspectives. The results show variations in urbanization scores and water footprints among different provinces, with the agricultural sector consuming the most water. This comprehensive analysis contributes to the development of better practices for managing water resources.

Synergy and competition of water in Food-Energy-Water Nexus: Insights for sustainability

En Hua et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the synergy and competition for water between food and energy using an optimization approach based on a case study of 31 provinces in the Chinese Mainland. The results show that there is inter-industry competitive water use and water unsustainability. The paper proposes two response paths to facilitate the gradual evolution of the industry competition unsustainability scenario into the industry synergy sustainability scenario, contributing to the efficient and sustainable integrated management of food, energy, and water.

Optimization of water quality monitoring programs by data mining

Demian da Silveira Barcellos et al.

Summary: Water quality monitoring programs in developing countries face challenges due to limited resources and infrastructure. This article proposes a data mining approach to optimize these programs by reducing the number of parameters. The approach extracts patterns from a database and uses association rules to estimate laboratory variables based on field parameters. The method was tested in 35 monitoring stations in Brazil and successfully estimated 56% of the laboratory parameters. The results demonstrate the potential of this approach to improve the efficiency and coverage of water quality monitoring networks.

Compliance with EAT-Lancet dietary guidelines would reduce global water footprint but increase it for 40% of the world population

Marta Tuninetti et al.

Summary: The EAT-Lancet Commission has proposed a global benchmark diet, but it is uncertain whether consumers' choices align with these recommendations. An analysis of 172 countries over nearly six decades reveals that developed countries consume excessive animal products, fats, and sugars, while lacking in legumes, nuts, and fruits. Countries with limited socio-economic progress primarily rely on carbohydrates and starchy roots. Progress towards healthy and sustainable dietary targets varies among countries, with seafood, milk products, poultry, and vegetable oils showing gradual changes. Adoption of the EAT-Lancet diet globally would reduce the water footprint by 12%, but increase it for nearly 40% of the world's population.

Understanding household water-use behaviour in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa

Genius Murwirapachena

Summary: Climate change, population growth, and industrial activities pose a threat to water security, requiring demand management policies for reducing water shortages. A study in Johannesburg, South Africa, found that while households lack water-efficient appliances, they do practice water-saving behaviors. Older males and lower-income respondents are more likely to engage in efficient water-use behavior, whereas demographic variables generally do not influence the adoption of water-efficient appliances. These results are crucial for policymakers to develop targeted water demand management policies, focusing on younger individuals, women, and higher-income households for promoting efficient water use behavior.
