Rainfall-induced landslide inventories for Lower Mekong based on Planet imagery and a semi-automatic mapping method

Pukar Amatya et al.

Summary: This article highlights the urgent need for a landslide early warning system in the Lower Mekong Region and describes the use of the SALaD-CD system to generate rainfall event-based landslide inventories. The inventories, created for various locations in the region, are being used to train the LHASA-Mekong model and assess the impact of land use/land cover change on landslide susceptibility. These open data will contribute to advancing landslide studies in the region.

Global Assessment of the Capability of Satellite Precipitation Products to Retrieve Landslide-Triggering Extreme Rainfall Events

Odin Marc et al.

Summary: Rainfall-induced landsliding is a global hazard that is expected to increase with current climate change. However, our ability to understand and mitigate this hazard is limited by the lack of rainfall measurements in landslide prone areas. Satellite multisensor precipitation products (SMPPs) have been proposed as a solution, but their ability to accurately characterize rainfall events triggering landsliding has not been well assessed.

AReGeoDatHa: Apulian Regional GeoDatabase for geo-hydrological Hazards

Carmela Vennari et al.

Summary: Geo-hydrological disasters pose a significant problem in many regions, particularly in Italy, where the risk is widespread. Accurate data collection is crucial for creating hazard and risk maps, and the efficiency of sources used for data collection plays a crucial role. In this study, a geospatial database was compiled for the Apulian region in southern Italy, documenting geo-hydrological hazards and damage over recent decades. A method for evaluating the quality of information sources was proposed and analyzed.

Insights from the topographic characteristics of a large global catalog of rainfall-induced landslide event inventories

Robert Emberson et al.

Summary: Landslides are a significant hazard in high-relief areas and understanding their potential occurrence is crucial for assessing risk and impacts. Large triggering events such as earthquakes or heavy rainfall can cause multiple landslides, providing extensive datasets of their locations. This study examines the topographic parameters associated with rainfall-induced landslides and finds that the average upstream angle and compound topographic index are strong predictors of landslide scar location. The results also suggest that local relief and topographic position index can indicate where landslide material may accumulate, thus identifying high-hazard areas.
