Ecodesign: Approaches for sugarcane bagasse ash mortars a Brazilian context

C. C. A. Sposito et al.

Summary: In addition to environmental impacts, the sustainability of mortars should also consider their technological aspect. A study in Brazil assessed the use of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) mortars using an ecodesign method, which considered both environmental and technical performance. The analysis included evaluating the impact of various percentages of SCBA replacing Portland cement, different economic scenarios in Brazil, and various life cycle impact categories related to the sugarcane industry and cement production. The results indicated that SCBA-15 and SCBA-30 mortars achieved the desired technical function with high impact mitigation potential, despite a slight trade-off on mechanical performance eco-efficiency situation.

Properties of binary and ternary mixes of cement, sugarcane bagasse ash and limestone

Andreia Arenari de Siqueira et al.

Summary: The study focused on the production and characterization of binary and ternary mixes of cement, sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) and limestone to evaluate their physical and chemical effects in cementitious systems. Results showed that SCBA had a positive impact on the cementitious system, while limestone accelerated hydration initially but decreased compressive strength in the long term.

Valorization of pelagic sargassum biomass into sustainable applications: Current trends and challenges

Fernando Amador-Castro et al.

Summary: Pelagic Sargassum mats have been abundant in the Sargasso Sea, but recent years have seen problems caused by massive amounts reaching the coast of countries in the Caribbean and West Africa. While there are various potential applications for this seaweed, large-scale development is still lacking. Developing a biorefinery approach is key to effectively utilizing this abundant biomass.

Eco-friendly incorporation of sugarcane bagasse ash as partial replacement of sand in foam concrete

Saleh Ali Khawaja et al.

Summary: The research investigates the utilization of sugarcane bagasse ash in foam concrete production to enhance mechanical and thermal properties. The addition of 10% sugarcane bagasse ash increased compressive strength by 14.50% and decreased thermal conductivity by 10.76%. It was found that the improvement in properties was attributed to the formation of secondary calcium silicate hydrate gel and the lightweight nature of bagasse ash.
