Risk Assessment of Falling Objects from Facades of Existing Buildings

Fudong Ma et al.

Summary: This study established a database of potential safety hazards of falling objects from facades based on the statistics of detection facades in Shanghai. Detailed insufficiencies and swelling defects were analyzed. A risk assessment system using the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) method was developed, and the weight coefficient was determined by the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The risk of falling objects from facades was assessed using the Monte Carlo model, and risk control measures were proposed.

Survey of trauma patients injured by falling or flying objects in Japan based on the Japan Trauma Data Bank

Youichi Yanagawa et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively investigated patients injured by falling/flying objects using the Japan Trauma Data Bank (JTDB). The results showed that head injuries were the most frequent type of injury in both the UA and LA groups, but the frequency of head injuries was significantly higher in the UA group. Additionally, the UA group had a significantly higher percentage of female patients, average age, and average TRISS value compared to the LA group.

Evaluating the Influence of Different Layouts of Residential Buildings on the Urban Thermal Environment

Yuanyuan Li et al.

Summary: Urban residential building layouts have an impact on air temperature and thermal comfort. Poorly designed layouts can cause thermal discomfort. Through simulations of six typical layouts, it was found that parallel layouts exhibited more significant air temperature changes, while enclosed layouts were the optimal configuration. Additionally, increasing building height and vegetation can reduce air temperature.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of global climate models in simulating various climate variables and compares the biases and uncertainties between two versions of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. It finds that CMIP6 models have less bias and lower uncertainty compared to CMIP5 models, particularly in simulating rainfall, temperatures, and wind speed.

Interaction between heat wave and urban heat island: A case study in a tropical coastal city, Singapore

Lup Wai Chew et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between heat waves and urban heat island effects in a tropical city by studying the heat wave event in Singapore in April 2016. The results showed that there was no significant amplification of urban heat island intensity during the heat wave period, indicating the absence of a synergistic effect between heat waves and urban heat island effects in the tropical city. This suggests that the interaction between heat waves and urban heat island effects may differ in tropical cities compared to cities in temperate climate zones.

Holistic analysis and prediction of life cycle cost for vertical greenery systems in Singapore

Ziyou Huang et al.

Summary: This study established a prediction model for the life cycle cost (LCC) of vertical greenery systems (VGS) using data from 40 cases, with the OPLS model selected for its good prediction performance and avoidance of collinearity issues. The combined OPLS model was separated into three individual models for improved total prediction accuracy (85.4% to 95.5%), while key variables affecting the LCC of different types of VGS were identified. Applications of the LCC prediction models for VGS for various stakeholders were also discussed in the conclusion of the study.
