Aberrant Resting-State Functional Brain Connectivity of Insular Subregions in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Linghong Kong et al.

Summary: The study explored the functional connectivity between insular subregions and other brain areas in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its relationship with clinical symptoms. The results showed that OSA patients exhibited abnormal functional connectivity in the insular subregions, which were related to cognitive, emotional, and sensorimotor networks. These findings provide a new imaging perspective for understanding OSA-related cognitive and affective disorders.

Effects of 3-month CPAP therapy on brain structure in obstructive sleep apnea: A diffusion tensor imaging study

Xiang Liu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that patients with untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exhibit abnormal changes in white matter (WM) fibers, which are associated with cognitive impairment. However, short-term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy does not result in reversible changes in WM microstructure.

Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Increased Cortical Amyloid-β Deposition

Salla Yla-Herttuala et al.

Summary: The study revealed that a substantial number of middle-aged cognitive intact patients with severe OSA exhibited increased cortical Aβ uptake, with some showing reduced cortical glucose metabolism. MRI did not show AD-related structural changes, suggesting that severe OSA may predispose to alterations related to AD in middle-age, highlighting the importance of early diagnostics and treatment to possibly reduce the risk for later cognitive dysfunction.

Summary: This study showed that the insula's role in suicide attempts among depressed patients has not been fully understood, but disruptions in the resting-state functional connectivity may be related to the orbitofrontal cortex and motor cortices.

Summary: This study found frequency-related abnormalities of brain activity in OSA patients before and after short-term CPAP treatment. These abnormalities may serve as potential biomarkers for clinical CPAP treatment.

The role of lateralisation and sex on insular cortex: 3D volumetric analysis

Fatma Oz et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in insular volume between males and females, with males having larger total brain, total cerebral, left and right insular, and cerebral volumes. Additionally, the right insular volume was higher than the left, and the left cerebral volume was higher than the right. These findings suggest that sex and laterality play a role in brain structure.
