Vacancy localization effects on MX2 transition-metal dichalcogenides: A systematic ab initio study

Rafael L. H. Freire et al.

Summary: This study extensively investigates the energetics of vacancy formation in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (MX2). It is found that chalcogen vacancies are always energetically favorable, but metal vacancies in late transition metals such as Pd and Pt can be experimentally achieved and introduce localized magnetic moments. The localization of the chalcogen vacancy states determines the intra- and intervacancy interactions, as well as the number, electronic dispersion, and spin-orbit coupling splitting of vacancy states within the semiconducting gap.

Defect-Free MoS2-Flakes/Amorphous-Carbon Hybrid as an Advanced Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Duc Anh Dinh et al.

Summary: Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising alternative for the anode of Li-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and layered structure. To address issues such as low electrical conductivity, high volume change, and complicated synthesis, MoS2 flakes/amorphous carbon hybrids (MoS2/C) are proposed for application as anodes. The exceptional performance of MoS2/C hybrids is attributed to the carbon network acting as a buffer layer to mitigate the volume change of MoS2 for improved electrochemical performance in Li+ storage applications.
